Message from the Managing Director

There are many new and exciting initiatives happening at the Cutler Center and Finance Division this fall. Several Cutler Center events and speakers of note include:
 
  • Investments Career Panel, comprised of senior investment professionals for the faculty and alumni, is on September 22nd from 4:45 - 6 p.m. in Olin Auditorium. This event is being sponsored with the Babson Investment Management Association (BIMA) and the UG and Grad Centers for Career Development (CCD).
 
  • Walter Donovan, Chief Investment Officer, Putnam Investments, will be presenting on Thursday, October 6th from 5 - 6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Boston. Mr. Donovan, who brings nearly 25 years of investments experience, will lead a panel discussion with the Putnam Investments' senior investments team on the outlook for various markets.  The Cutler Center is co-sponsoring this event with the Boston Security Analysts Society (BSAS).

 

  • Jurrien Timmer '85, Director of Global Macro and portfolio manager, Fidelity Management & Research Company, will present on Tuesday, October 18th from 5 - 6 pm, with a reception to follow, in the Olin Auditorium. Mr. Timmer will discuss the state of the equities and bond markets, interest rates, hard assets, the dollar, and where value exists in the global markets today.

Finally, we are pleased to report that Bloomberg Businessweek ranked Babson #6 in financial management among undergraduate business schools.

Cutler Center/Finance Division News

Professor Laurie Krigman has started The Babson Young Alumni Mentor Network. This network pairs undergraduates concentrating in Finance with young alumni for the purpose of career and job search mentoring.
 
During the 2011-2012 academic year, 35 students applied to the mentor network and 22 students were accepted and have been paired with mentors in their chosen fields. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Professor Laurie Krigman by email at lkrigman@babson.edu or by phone at 781-239-4246.
 
Professor Ryan Davies received the 2011 Babson College Faculty Scholarship Award. He has also been invited to present papers at the following university research seminars:
 
  • October 12, 2011 ICMA Centre, University of Reading
 
  • October 27, 2011 Université Paris-Dauphine
 
  • March 2, 2012 Australian National University
 
In addition, Professor Davies will be hosting the following Babson Alumni Events and giving a short presentation of his research project "Pink Pills for Pale People: A Snapshot of Entrepreneurship, Patent Medicine, and Finance in 1905." 
 
  • Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sunday, September 25th at 7pm, Mosto Wine Bar at Hilton Buenos Aires Macacha Guemes
 
  • London, UK, Thursday, October 13th at 7pm, 5th View at Waterstone's Piccadilly (203-206 Piccadilly, London W1J 9LE)
 
  • Paris, France, Wednesday, October 26th at 7pm, Le Dauphine (85, Boulevard Flandrin 75016 - Paris)
 
Professor John Edmunds received notification of two article acceptances:
 
  • "Indexing and Chile's Economic Growth" co-authored with Francisco Arroyo, to be published in the Issue 1, 2011 of the journal "Public and Municipal Finance."
 
  • "Chile's Semi-Successful Export Development" co-authored with Francisco Arroyo, to be published in Issue 3, 2011 of the journal "Problems and Perspectives in Management."
 
In addition, since the Spring of 2011, Professor Edmunds has published about half a dozen articles in Spanish in Latin American business magazines and newspapers.
 
Professor Michael Goldstein has been appointed Chair of the Economic Advisory Committee of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).
 
In June, he presented his "ice roads" National Science Foundation research on the effect of seasonality on the Arctic Economy at the Seventh tri-annual International Congress of Arctic Social Sciences Conference (ICASS-VII) in Akureyri, Iceland.
 
Professor Richard Bliss received the 2011 Dean's Award of Excellence in Graduate Teaching.

Library Resources News

Did you know Babson alumni have use of the Cutler Center, including full access to Bloomberg and Factset? If you want to improve your financial skill set, hone your existing knowledge of investment tools, test your portfolio ideas or prepare for a job interview, the Cutler Center is your destination! Many recent alumni are using the Center's video tutorials for learning Bloomberg and Factset or to job search using our unique databases. Email Jack Cahill (jcahill@babson.edu) to get started.
 

Student Organization News

The Babson Investment Management Association (BIMA) has started the 2011-2012 academic year strong. The Cutler Center and BIMA are co-sponsoring several events this year. One event coming up is the Investments Career Panel on Thursday, September, 22nd in Olin Auditorium. See the Cutler Center Events page for more information.
There will be a BIMA information session and elections held
from 5 - 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 15th in Olin 202.
