She is known for her personal way of writing for her 18-member instrumental collective, tailoring her compositions to highlight the uniquely creative voices of the group. Her music blurs the lines between genres, giving her a long and diverse list of commissioners, stretching from Jazz at Lincoln Center to The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra to David Bowie. She is among the very few musicians to have received Grammy Awards in multiple genres.

Schneider is not only an award-winning composer and instrumentalist but an innovative business entrepreneur and music rights advocate. Click here to RSVP

Artist Talk and Reception: Wednesday, April 5, 5:00 P.M.
Exhibit on View: April 5–May 19

Sachiko Akiyama’s work brings together artistic influences of Brancusi, Egyptian funerary sculptures, medieval Christian woodcarvings, and contemporary sculptors with the artist’s personal experiences and Japanese heritage, notably Japanese fairy tales. Her carvings convey a sense of centeredness and direct connections to nature that opens up the door to creation mythologies and other mystical possibilities. The figures’ relationships to flora, fauna, and the elements speak metaphorically to the ways we find meaning in our lives and meet the challenges of our surroundings.

She launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2014 to produce a documentary film. Her campaign was supported by nearly 9,000 Kickstarter donors who pledged more than $330,000. Babson College's Center for Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership (CWEL) was proudly one of the first corporate-level sponsors of the project.

Released in 2016, the documentary "Embrace" follows Taryn’s crusade as she traverses the globe talking to experts, women in the street and well-known personalities about the alarming rates of body image issues that are seen in people of all body types. In her effervescent style, Taryn explores the factors contributing to this problem and seeks to find solutions.

Embrace had its world premiere at the 2016 Sydney Film Festival, where it was chosen as one of the festival directors’ top 5 picks.
