Santiago Umaschi is an entrepreneur with almost 20 years experience in the financial services industry. Currently he is managing partner of North-South Consulting, a strategy consulting firm specializing in helping businesses from Latin America start operations and find financing in the US and US companies that are seeking to expand into Latin American markets.
Previously he was a Vice President of Corporate Strategy for a $15 billion savings and loan now owned by New York Community Bank, where he helped the family-owned bank professionalize their company and successfully assimilate the tremendous growth the firm experienced. He opened their first international office in Canada to underwrite construction loans and oversaw numerous innovative IT initiatives, including the first transactional web portal for construction lending in the country. While at Safdie Group, he was a Senior Vice President where he worked closely with family ownership, helping manage financial interests in their New York, Swiss, and Brazilian banks. Santiago’s primary responsibilities included overseeing investment strategy and managing their private equity investments across a wide variety of industry sectors and countries, both as buyers and sellers. Santiago managed the international private banking offices in six countries, recruiting and managing local private bankers each responsible for an average of $300 million in deposits.
Additionally, he spearheaded the creation of CBNY ISC, a broker dealer that handled the international accounts of Commercial Bank of New York prior to its sale. Santiago was instrumental in the sale of Commercial Bank of New York in the US and of Banco Cidade in Brazil.
Santiago co-founded the largest independent record label in Argentina and headed economic research for Argentina’s housing authority where he published numerous articles analyzing the impacts of housing policies earlier in his career.
