Michael Bell

Adjunct Lecturer

Michael Bell is a Managing Partner and founder of Monitor Clipper Partners, a private-equity firm located in Cambridge, with over $2 billion under management and currently investing out of its third fund.  After working at Bain & Co., he was also a founder of The Monitor Group, an international consulting firm, where he and five other Harvard Business School colleagues, including Michael Porter, grew this start-up company to over $300mm in sales and 1000 people globally.  Mike also served as Senior Executive Vice President of John Hancock Financial Services.  He had a direct reporting relationship with the CEO/Chairman of the Board, and was responsible for operations of the business as there was no chief operating officer.  He led a turnaround of the major business areas; the growth rate of the company almost doubled the market, while achieving improved margins and the industry’s highest productivity.  Mike played a key role in the sale of John Hancock to Manulife Financial, which was also a previous consulting client.  The sale was at double the initial IPO price of John Hancock.
Mike served as Chairman of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospital.   During Mike’s tenure, a $20 million loss was turned into an operating profit of more than $40 million, while transitioning in a new president.  Mike remains heavily involved in Partners Health Care and the Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospital, sitting on the Finance Committee of both organizations and as a trustee of Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospital.
His industry specialties at Monitor Clipper Partners include: information security, shipping logistics for mail and packages, integrated security systems, procurement outsourcing, education software and services, pharmaceutical marketing services and workers compensation products and services, and healthcare provision and financing.  Additionally he assisted in creating and developing higher education and pre-professional education vehicles, using both remote technology and physical plant.
Mike’s strong and varied management, consulting and investing expertise, along with his entrepreneurial experience, both personally and with investments, provides a stimulating environment for his Babson students.
