Babson Authors Write New Book on Social Value Creation

Creating Social Value: A Guide for Leaders and Change Makers is a manual for change

Creating Social ValueBabson College’s Cheryl Kiser, Deborah Leipziger, and Janelle Shubert have authored Creating Social Value: A Guide for Leaders and Change Makers (March 2014, Greenleaf Publishing). The textbook is an essential strategy guide to help businesses and organizations of all kinds generate social value within their cultures.

Creating Social Value offers a new definition of business success based on the concept of creating economic value in a way that also creates value for society. The book follows the paths of entrepreneurial leaders as they plan and maneuver change within their companies, industry sectors, and even through their newly-formed partnerships with competitors and others.

“This book provides much-needed insights on important global trends and how they affect the viability of private sector activities. As business has gone global and commercial activities are penetrating deeper into people's lives, the boundaries between the public and private spheres are blurring. Creating social value is no longer an externality; it is deeply connected to the long-term success of enterprises,” said Georg Kell, Executive Director, UN Global Compact.

Creating Social Value has been designed as a manual for change. It will be essential reading for business students, entrepreneurs and all of those wishing to effect positive, generative change in larger organizations.

About the Authors

Cheryl Kiser is the Executive Director of The Lewis Institute and The Babson Social Innovation Lab, and is responsible for leading a critical aspect of the growth strategy for Babson by promoting broad support for Babson's work in integrating social innovation and social relevance into its curriculum and co-curricular activities. She is a recognized leader in corporate social responsibility and social innovation. Before coming to Babson, Cheryl was the Managing Director of the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship. For more than 12 years she played a central role in creating the largest research center of its kind in the U.S., and spearheaded a national initiative to engage leading businesses to take a collaborative approach to working on education issues. Cheryl is also the co-creator of Food Sol, an “action tank” at Babson’s Social Innovation Lab dedicated to using entrepreneurship to redesign the food system.

Janelle Shubert is an Adjunct Lecturer at Babson College. Prior to this she had spent almost thirty years in university teaching and administration. This included work at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government (1992-2004), London Business School (Visiting faculty 1990-1992), Harvard University's Business School (1986-1990), Harvard University’s Program on Negotiation (1985-1986) and the University of Michigan (1978-1985). A consultant for over three decades, working with public and private, for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, Shubert also served for four years as a senior member of a consulting group dedicated specifically to helping organizations enhance the leadership development of their most talented senior women.

Deborah Leipziger is an author, consultant, and professor in the field of social value creation. She is a Senior Fellow in Social Innovation at Babson’s Social Innovation Lab and serves as Adjunct Faculty at the Simmons School of Management. She advises companies around the world on human rights issues and played a key role in the development of several key standards, including Social Accountability 8000. She is the author of several key books in the field of CSR and Sustainability, including The Corporate Responsibility Code Book (Greenleaf Publishing).
