Venezuelan CADIVI Information

What is CADIVI?

CADIVI (Comisión de Administración de Divisas - Commission for the Administration of Currency Exchange) is the Venezuelan government body which administers currency exchange in Venezuela. Commercial banks and other authorized exchange agents are required to obtain authorization from CADIVI in order to trade Bolίvares Fuertes (VEF) into U.S. dollars (USD). Who utilizes the CADIVI process?

  • Those who needs to exchange VEF for USD in order to travel, study or import products.

  • Those who wishes to exchange Venezuelan currency to any other currency.

  • Students and scholars in F and J status.

  • Business people importing goods from Venezuela to the U.S. or other countries which accept the dollar.

  •  Venezuelan tourists traveling to the U.S.

What is the CADIVI Process?

  1. Students must provide multiple documents to CADIVI in order to benefit from a favorable exchange rate.
  2. If CADIVI approves request, transfer of funds at the favorable exchange rate is permitted
  3. If CADIVI denies request or process is delayed, student is responsible for fining alternative means of payment.

Documents which may be Required

  • Registration with CADIVI:
  • Letter from Babson verifying enrollment and explaining costs - this should correspond to Form I-20 (F status) or Form DS-2019 (J status) and dates of sessions (must be notarized then sent to the Capital for an Apostille)
  • Acceptance Letter from Babson (for your first semester only) or class schedule
  • Form I-20 (F status) or Form DS-2019 (J status), I-94 Arrival/Departure record, visa, passport identification and expiration page(s), & Venezuelan ID (cedula)
  • 2 applications (Constancia de Registro Consular & Registro de Venezolanos)
  • All of these documents must be sent to the Venezuelan Consulate in D.C. with a prepaid, addressed return envelope
  • Once received from D.C. can be sent to Venezuela
  • Proof of previous CADIVI funds transfer (if you have been approved in the past)

How do I Request a Babson Letter?

Submit a Babson Letter Request Form via e-mail or drop off in person to the Office of the Registrar. The Office of the Registrar will notify you in three to five business days to pick up your official, signed and notarized Babson Letter. Note: You will be required to present your Babson One Card for identification purposes.

If you are unable to pick up the letter in person, ensure that you have completed the mailing address on the Babson Letter Request Form and the letter will be sent to you via the service which you have indicated.

What Details are Included in a Babson Letter?

All letters issued by the Office of the Registrar and Student Financial Services are in a format and consisting of only that information which is required, as determined by best practices in the field. The letter will include: academic information (enrollment start date, expected graduation date, degree/major, current enrollment, and student identification number if requested). The Registrar’s Office cannot verify any semester that a student is not enrolled in. The letter will also include the required University expenses: tuition and medical insurance, and on-campus housing and meals if the student lives on-campus. Only expenses that appear on your student account can be included in the Babson letter.

It is your responsibility to get the Babson Letter translated into Spanish.

Notary Public

The translated Babson Letter must be signed by the student for whom it was issued, stating that this is the correct and an exact translation.  It is advisable that this signature be validated by the same Notary Public who notarized the student’s signature on the original English version of the letter. Apostille is an authentication of documents for use overseas. Authentications are in the form of either an apostille or a gold seal certificate. If the country to which a document pertains is part of the Hague Convention of 1961 (#12), the document receives an apostille.
