Cancellation

Canceling your Optional Practical Training (OPT) application may or may not be possible, depending on how far into the application process you have progressed.

If your new Form I-20 recommending OPT has been issued but you have not submitted it to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS):

If your Form I-20 recommending OPT has already been issued but you have not yet sent your application to USCIS, simply notify your International Student Advisor (ISA) that you will not be submitting your application. Your ISA will then cancel the recommendation.

If you have submitted your application to USCIS but have not yet received your Employment Authorization Document (EAD):

If you have submitted your application to USCIS but have not yet received your EAD, you may contact the Vermont Service Center (VSC) directly to request withdrawal of your application.

To withdraw your application, send a letter to the VSC which includes the following information:

  • Your name, date of birth, SEVIS ID number
  • Application receipt number (A copy of the receipt is also helpful).
  • Specific request that the Form I-765 application for OPT be withdrawn and why, e.g. CPT approval
  • Write “Re: I-765 Withdrawal” at the top and sign the letter.

Send your letter to:

USCIS Vermont Service Center
75 Lower Welden Street
St. Albans, VT 05479

Once you have made this request it will not be possible to change your mind again, though if eligible, you can submit a new application in the future. If you decide to withdraw your application after you have picked up your new Form I-20 with OPT recommendation, be sure to notify your International Student Advisor of your decision.

If you have already received your EAD:

If you have already received your EAD, submit a letter along with your EAD to the address above. Your letter should include the information listed above.

Please note: Students have successfully cancelled OPT after having received their EAD, but there is a significant chance that you will not be able to retrieve your unused OPT. The Glavin Office MAKES NO GUARANTEE that USCIS will accept your cancellation letter or refund any of your time, especially if the period of authorization indicated on your EAD has already begun.

  • It is unlikely that you will receive any response from USCIS.
  • Be sure to keep copies of all documents (including your letter) for your records!
  • You will need to include this letter if you apply for OPT again in the future.
  • Mail your letter and any supporting documents (such as an endorsed I-20 indicating CPT authorization) by "Return Receipt" so you have proof of delivery to:
    USCIS Vermont Service Center
