Babson President Search

After more than five years of service, Kerry Healey announced that she will step down as president in June 2019 at the end of her second term. Healey has served as the College’s 13th president, and its first female president, since 2013.

Babson College will perform a national search for its 14th president, partnering with Spencer Stuart, a national executive search firm with expertise in higher education.

The Babson College Board of Trustees appointed 13 community members to serve on the Presidential Search Committee. Chaired by Bruce T. Herring ’87, vice chair, Board of Trustees, the search committee is comprised of representatives from all segments of the Babson community, including governance, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents, as well as current students in Babson’s undergraduate and graduate school programs.

The committee will work closely with the Spencer Stuart team. Members of the Babson community will have the opportunity to share input, through a variety of methods, ensuring that this search process is informed by multiple viewpoints. Community members also are encouraged to share confidential feedback and nominations directly with Spencer Stuart.

Latest Search Update

September 18, 2018

Dear Fellow Babson Community Members,

During the past two months, the search committee has had the opportunity to engage with Babson’s governance members, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends around the world. More than 1,300 members of our community participated in our listening tour, including approximately 300 members attending listening sessions conducted on campus and by phone, and more than 1,000 members contributing to the online survey or directly communicating with our partners at Spencer Stuart. We are profoundly grateful for the time you took to share your perspective, your concerns, and your aspirations with us. Your passion for the College is inspiring and an important reminder of what makes Babson so extraordinary.

Your involvement in this process has provided important input into defining the opportunity that lies ahead for Babson and the type of leader we need as we embark on our next centennial. Through our listening tour, we learned our community deeply values our No. 1 standing and niche in entrepreneurship education, and recognizes the importance of the global nature of the education we offer and the diverse, global community we foster. We also heard that, though Babson begins its second century in an incredibly strong position, the significant challenges facing higher education should be a key factor in selecting our next president. You have emphasized that, while the next president works to strengthen our business model and take on the disruption we see around us, the College must simultaneously continue to put our students first by finding new avenues to make a Babson education affordable and continually evolving our curriculum to bring even greater value to students and their families.

We also heard from you that Babson’s next president needs to be a visionary leader, one who understands these challenges and opportunities and who has shown success leading change in a shared governance environment. A leader who will build on our current strengths and extend our lead while so many other institutions struggle to identify their unique position. And, importantly, someone who embraces our mission and will articulate a strategic vision that will galvanize our community as we enter our second century.

We have relied on your input to develop the “Presidential Position Specification (pdf),” which is attached for your reference. We encourage you to read the document, as it lays out these priorities in greater detail. We will be using this document as a key part of our candidate search and assessment process.

August 17, 2018

Dear Fellow Babson Community Members,

On behalf of the search committee, I want to thank those of you who have engaged in the presidential search process to date. Even at this early juncture, we have heard from a great number of Babson community members and have received more than two dozen nominations to consider. I am grateful for the helpful input and ideas you have shared as we search for Babson’s next president.

For those of you who have not yet had a chance to provide feedback, I encourage you to participate in the following opportunities the committee has created to capture your thoughts and perspective:

  • We are launching an online survey which provides a confidential way to share your input directly with the Spencer Stuart team. The survey will remain open until midnight on Wednesday, September 12, 2018. This forum is an important way for the committee to hear from alumni, parents, and friends around the world, as well as members of our community who may be unable to attend a listening session. The survey is anonymous and only aggregate results will be shared with the committee.
  • We also are planning additional on-campus listening sessions next month once the academic year is underway. Please mark your calendars for Thursday, September 6, 2018, in the FME Auditorium:

    Faculty Listening Session
    8:45–9:45 a.m.
    Staff Listening Session
    10–11 a.m.
    Student Listening Session
    12:30–1:30 p.m.

At these listening sessions, members of the Spencer Stuart team will seek your input on four key questions:

  • What is distinctive about Babson and unlikely to change well into the future?
  • What are the opportunities and challenges facing the next president? In five to six years, how might we be an even stronger institution?
  • What are the characteristics, background, and experiences you would like to see in the next president?
  • What advice or feedback would you give the search committee as it begins this process?

I strongly urge you to respond to the survey and/or participate in a listening session if at all possible. You also can send confidential nominations directly to Spencer Stuart. Your input is essential in helping inform the search committee’s work as we prepare the “Presidential Position Specification” and begin to explore possible candidates.

Lastly, I want to share some news relating to the search committee itself. A member of the committee, Dean Lawrence Ward, has been nominated as a potential candidate. While he is not an applicant at this time, Larry has stepped down from the committee in order to avoid any potential conflict of interest should he decide to be considered for the position. I respect and appreciate Larry’s decision and thank him for his contributions to date. In conjunction with the Board of Trustees, I have appointed Amir Reza, Babson’s Vice Provost for International & Multicultural Education, to the committee and very much look forward to Amir’s involvement in this exciting effort.

Dear Fellow Babson Community Members,

I am pleased to share that we are making good progress in the presidential search process. During the last few weeks, the Presidential Search Committee has moved forward with several key planning and outreach efforts to begin gathering feedback and ideas about Babson’s next president. On behalf of the search committee, thank you for attending the listening session held on campus earlier this month. More than 120 campus community members participated in this initial robust conversation. The search committee members in attendance and the Spencer Stuart team found the discussion to be very informative and helpful. I also want to thank you for the thoughtful nominations submitted to date. Spencer Stuart has already fielded nearly a dozen nominations sourced from the community.

As we look forward to the start of the next academic year, we want to ensure the Spencer Stuart team continues to benefit from your perspective. Your feedback and guidance will help the search committee develop the “Presidential Position Specification,” a document that will help inform Spencer Stuart’s work as it explores potential candidates.

Additional listening sessions for faculty, staff and students will be held on campus in early September. We will be back in touch shortly with details about these forums. Also, within the next few weeks, we will launch the e-survey, which will enable community members—both on and off campus—to provide feedback and share thoughts that will help inform the search effort. Dear Fellow Babson Community Members,

I am writing with an update on our progress in the search for Babson’s next president. Earlier this week, the Presidential Search Committee convened for its first meeting. The committee, comprised of 12 community members representing governance, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and parents, focused on working with our partners at Spencer Stuart to design a search process that will attract a diverse and talented pool of candidates who align with Babson’s culture, mission, and vision for the future.

To succeed in this effort, we recognize that we must first understand the institution’s needs and aspirations and identify the specific leadership qualities, experiences, skills, and characteristics Babson’s 14th president will require to successfully lead the College into its second century. It is essential that we gain as much input and as many ideas as possible from the Babson community to inform this work. With the benefit of your perspective and participation, we can better shape the presidential position description and more judiciously identify ideal candidates for the role. We are creating a variety of opportunities throughout the summer and early fall for the entire Babson community to get involved in the process and provide input. Included in our early plans are the following activities:

  • A series of small group and open forum listening sessions will be held for faculty, staff, and students once the new academic year is underway;
  • Dring the summer, we will launch an e-survey to begin reaching the broadest possible spectrum of community members, including our 40,000+ alumni across 114 countries; and,
  • In the coming weeks, we also will take advantage of Spencer Stuart’s visits to campus in order to offer listening sessions for faculty and staff who are in Wellesley at this time of year. An early opportunity to share your thoughts in person with Spencer Stuart will be Monday, July 9, 2018, from 2–3:30 p.m. in the amphitheater located in Park Manor West. This session, co-led by Mary Gorman and Sue Clifford of Spencer Stuart, will be the first of several meetings and open forums we will hold throughout the summer and early fall.

Throughout the search process, we also want to provide direct and confidential ways to share your thoughts and suggestions with the Spencer Stuart team. Nominations and other comments relating to the search process can be sent confidentially at any time.

We are committed to an open and inclusive process that meaningfully engages our community and brings us closer together as we prepare for this exciting next chapter at Babson. We value your input and look forward to your involvement.

Dear Fellow Babson Community Members,

The Babson College Board of Trustees has approved the formation of a Presidential Search Committee to conduct the search for a successor to President Kerry Healey, who has announced her intention to step down from her position as Babson’s 13th president in June 2019. Trustee Bruce T. Herring ’87 has been appointed to serve as chair. The committee will be charged with making a recommendation to the Board regarding the next president and ensuring the entire Babson College community has ample opportunity to engage in the process.

Input will be solicited from the College’s governance, administrative, and academic leadership teams to formulate the committee, which will be comprised of members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and student representatives.

Babson has retained Spencer Stuart, a national executive search firm with expertise in higher education. The Spencer Stuart team shares a commitment to a collaborative process that fully engages the Babson community. They will work diligently to attract a talented and diverse pool of candidates aligned with Babson’s evolving leadership needs, unique culture, and global vision leading into the Centennial.
