Buildings

With 54% of Babson’s GHG emissions coming from operating campus buildings, Facilities Management works diligently to make Babson as efficient as possible. Emissions from building energy use have dropped by 40% since 2006. 


Overview

In FY 2017, 54% of Babson’s GHG footprint came from the purchased electricity, natural gas, and fuel oil used to operate buildings on campus. In order to reduce these emissions, Facilities Management has been working to implement energy efficiency and conservation projects for heating, cooling, lighting, and other campus energy users.

Park Manors South and Central were renovated in 2015 and certified as LEED Silver.  Park Manor West was built to LEED Certified standards. 


Heating

Several buildings on campus have been retrofitted to improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption. New boilers have been installed in Forest, Park Manor South, Park Manor Central, Tomasso, Woodland Hill 1, Woodland Hill 9 and 10, Horn Complex, Babson, Kriebel, Gerber, and Coleman. New domestic hot water tanks have been installed in Forest, Van Winkle, and Webster.


Cooling

Energy consumption from air conditioning is managed through automatic setbacks when buildings are not used, such as during the July 4th holiday.


Lighting

Energy consumption of lighting is reduced through upgrading to efficient fixtures and turning lights off when not in use. During the 2010–2011 academic year, administrative buildings across campus received lighting upgrades. These upgrades included:

  • Occupancy sensors installed in offices, hallways, bathrooms, and conference rooms to conserve energy.
  • LED exterior fixtures with day lighting sensors
  • T8 fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts


Other Projects

To reduce the carbon intensity of the Babson’s buildings, the Skating Rink, Boston Sports Club, and Woodland Hills 9 and 10 have been converted from fuel oil to natural gas.
