Keeping My Eye on the Ball and My Future

Owen Shea ’17 / Northborough, Massachusetts

“When I took economics in high school, I enjoyed the practical application of the material, so I wanted an education that merged my coursework and the real world. Babson’s entrepreneurial and academic curriculum stood out to me, in addition to its baseball program and strong alumni network, and I knew after my first semester here that I had made the right choice.

“Being on the baseball team has played a huge role in shaping my Babson experience. It’s shown me the value of life outside of work, and led me to pursue career options that will give me time for friends and family.”

“My goal growing up was to play college baseball and then go pro. I would still love to be a pro athlete, but at Babson I have had the chance to play baseball while I pursue the more realistic professional goal of a career in finance. Also, the fact that Babson is a smaller, close-knit community helped me develop connections with my peers, professors, and administrators that made the transition to college easier.

“I have been elected baseball captain two years in a row, and my relationships with my teammates and coaches are especially important to me—they continue to push me to the limit. Being on the baseball team has played a huge role in shaping my Babson experience. It’s shown me the value of life outside of work, and led me to pursue career options that will give me time for friends and family.

“The most important advice I have ever received was about the value of failing. You need to fail chasing opportunities and getting out of your comfort zone. If you don’t, you don’t grow. At Babson, there are so many opportunities everywhere to get involved and foster that growth, and to have experiences that better prepare you for the real world. Just in my classes, I’ve worked with students from around the globe that have shaped my outlook on the world and my role in it, informing me about how other people live and what they value.

“Outside of my classes, my extracurriculars constantly drive me to learn. I’ve been involved with the Babson Investment Banking Association and the Babson Investment Management Association, and my career exploration has been shaped by my experience at the Center for Career Development and my internships at Monster Worldwide and Fidelity Investments. I’ve learned how to apply my skills and interests to professional paths, and now I have career direction and advice that I will keep with me for the rest of my life.”
