Pursuing Passions with a Business Mindset

“Before coming to Babson, I didn’t think I could explore my interest in graphic design. Now, I’m teaching a senior-led seminar titled Designing Presentations to Tell Powerful Stories.”

“We often think of entrepreneurs as being born and that coming up with a product or service idea requires a magic spark of genius. I have learned at Babson that this cannot be further from the truth.

Anyone can be an entrepreneur. And, that’s a good thing: I can picture myself in many roles from a seventh grade teacher to a dance studio owner to a consultant. I believe there is nothing more powerful than teaching the leaders of tomorrow, and I think being an entrepreneur inherently means you are making a difference in the world. Entrepreneurs develop product or service solutions for people, profit, and planet.

“My interest in education expanded to include communications. I am passionate about the ways in which we tell stories through presentation design, as well as through brand strategy. Before coming to Babson, I didn’t think I could explore my interest in graphic design. However, I’ve attended three courses at the Rhode Island School of Design via my Weissman Scholarship, and shared my passion for graphic design with other students through the Babson Media + Design Studio. During my senior year, I taught a senior-led seminar titled Designing Presentations to Tell Powerful Stories.

“I had the opportunity to travel to Russia, India, China, and Ghana through Babson. What I learned was just how integral understanding the culture is to creating solutions that work within that cultural context. If entrepreneurship is all about seeing problems as opportunities and creating truly meaningful design solutions, then we need to have this kind of cultural humility.

“Sometimes, it is difficult to know where to begin. Entrepreneurial Thought and Action®  is all about embracing the ambiguity, thinking strategically, and using small experiments to confirm or reject assumptions before moving forward.

“And, that’s great news for me. I didn't have specific career plans, and I was OK with that. I was ready to embrace the ambiguity. I have faith in the journey.”
