We examine patterns of growth looking for evidence of curvilinear relationships and insights into the antecedents and correlates of peaks and valleys in performance. We report no evidence of curvilinearity, but associate the stability of founding teams with sustained growth and acquisitions of new technical personnel with increased growth rates. Companies experience declining sales when they drift way from customers or markets dry up with changes in regulations and legislation. Conflicts associated with hiring an external manager also correlate with downturns in performance.
