Success of high technology new firms is dependent on acquisition of technical resources and access to distribution channels that often are beyond the internal capabilities of the new firm. Strategic alliances are becoming common in many industries but are believed to be most critical to the success of new high technology firms. The establishment of strategic alliances, and their relationship to the performance of a high technology new firm is not well understood. The type of strategic alliance, the diversity of strategic alliances in place, and the location of the strategic alliance are examined in this study. In addition, strategic alliances among new firms versus more established and larger firms are compared.
