Program Overview

Raising capital to fund new ventures can be challenging amidst today’s dynamic markets and uncertain business environments. As an entrepreneur, you need to understand an array of options and considerations before deciding upon the best approach for financing your business. Entrepreneurial Finance: Raising Capital is a full-day program that focuses on the critical aspects of funding and managing entrepreneurial ventures through the various stages of business growth. The program covers early-stage investments from both the point of view of the investor and that of the entrepreneur while placing particular emphasis on fundamentals of deal structure and terms, as well as risk/reward scenarios for different investor types.

Program Objectives

Entrepreneurial Finance: Raising Capital is designed to help participants understand issues related to timing, approach, and expectations when selling equity; how to create capitalization tables and outcome analyses for negotiation and scenario planning purposes; and recognizing the terms and nuances of deal negotiations. Participants leave the program with a toolkit of new approaches that they can apply to their own ventures and an understanding of the interrelationship between business strategy and financial strategy.


Through lectures, mock negotiations, and exercises based on real companies, the program is designed to be hands-on, practical, and intensive. It covers a range of subjects including investment analysis, financing the entrepreneurial firm, managing the growing business, and harvesting. Participants create pro forma financial statements and read and analyze financial statements during the program.

Specific program topics include:

  • An introduction to raising capital
  • Tools of the trade: valuation, capitalization, and outcome analysis
  • Negotiation and deal structure
  • Understanding the nuances of financing deals

Since a large part of successful decision-making depends upon the entrepreneur’s ability to recognize patterns, an important aspect of the program will be the opportunity to learn from and network with other participants.

Entrepreneurial Finance: Raising Capital is designed for entrepreneurs of all kinds who are in the process of securing financing for their ventures, as well as those who are beginning the process or interested in learning more about financing for future endeavors. Participants with varying levels of financial acumen and experience will benefit from the hands-on and interactive nature of this program.

About the Faculty Director  

The program is led by Professor Angelo Santinelli. Santinelli is an
experienced leader and innovator in creating business strategy, marketing and delivering results. His more than 25 years of business experience covers a broad range of disciplines and responsibilities including business development, strategic planning, M&A, IPO, private equity financing, customer service, marketing and international operations. He also was the Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and Business Development at Shiva, a very successful telecommunications start-up that went public. Professor Santinelli has served on numerous boards of directors, participating in both audit and compensation committees. He is the founder of Dakin Management, a strategy consultancy focusing on small to medium size businesses. Professor Santinelli was previously a partner with North Bridge Venture Partners, where he began his investing career. His investment interests ranged from communications, wireless, software and Internet infrastructure.
