Verizon Invests in Babson College to Create an Entrepreneurship Program with Sociedad Latina for Urban Boston Public School Youth

In collaboration, Babson and Verizon will be enabling young people to solve problems in their community

Babson and Verizon Kick OffThis summer, Babson College will participate in a program under Verizon Innovative Learning, the education initiative of the Verizon Foundation, designed to bring technology skills and entrepreneurship principles to local high school students.

During the five week entrepreneurship program at the Babson Boston Campus, rising sophomores will learn skills like coding, social innovation, and communications using Babson’s Entrepreneurial Thought & Action® (ET&ATM) methodology.  In addition, they will work in teams to identify and solve for real community issues and develop prototypes for technology-based venture ideas.  The program will culminate in a pitch presentation where students will have the opportunity to showcase their solutions to a panel of expert judges.

Upon completion of the program, students will receive a credit in coding from Boston Public Schools, a Digital Badge in Critical Thinking from Boston Afterschool and Beyond.  Students will also be able take home the tablets and laptops they use during the camp for continued learning.

Final PresentationsCheryl Kiser, Executive Director of Babson College’s The Lewis Institute. “We look forward to working collaboratively with Verizon to inspire young leaders who will build their own futures grounded in their passions, while creating the change they want to see in their communities and the world. This is the vision of what a corporate and university partnership looks like and what it does.”

To create the greatest direct impact in the Boston community, Babson College has also partnered with Roxbury community organization, Sociedad Latina, to enroll youth participants. Sociedad Latina is a pillar of the Boston community and has worked with youth and families nearly 50 years to create the next generation of Latino leaders who are confident, competent, self-sustaining, and proud of their cultural heritage.

By equipping youth with an entrepreneurial mindset and the necessary technological skills to shape their future, they become empowered to create both personal and social change, and learn to value purpose as much as profit. Beyond the ventures they will create to solve obstacles in their community, students will also learn how to visualize and communicate how entrepreneurship and technology can create a global impact in addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG’s). This unique partnership with Verizon demonstrates the power of change when higher education, corporations and community organizations combine resources to create economic and social value.

We need more kids to see the world of possibilities waiting for them in STEM career fields.  This is why Verizon is giving free technology, access and immersive hands-on learning to kids in need. Learn more at www.weneedmore.com.Verizon Babson Summer Program
