Inserting Links

In general there are three types of links you can add to a page, a link to an internal SharePoint page, a link to an external webpage, or a link to an email. Please make sure to follow our Style Guide when formatting links.

Linking Internally

Step 1:

Highlight the linkable text. Please note that if you are linking to a document such as a .pdf you must label your link as such: Example (pdf) so that people know they are opening a PDF.

Step 2:

Select Editing Tools > Insert > Link > From SharePoint

A window showing the entire site file structure will display. Navigate to the correct section and page for your link.

Step 3:

In the pop-up window, navigate to the page you wish to link to. Select the link from the list of pages. Be sure the filename is highlighted in blue and the filename also appears in the Location URL field at the bottom of the display window.

Step 4:

The Link Tools menu will display with the URL. If the URL box is empty, click on the content and re-highlight the link text to start over again.

Step 5:

Enter the “Description” text into the empty field. If this is a link to a document (Doc, PPT, PDF) check the “Open in New Tab” box. Once done, click in the content area to resume editing. If you wish to test your link you must Save & Close.

Linking Externally

Step 1:

Highlight the linkable text.

Step 2:

Step 4:

Enter the “Description” text into the empty field. Since this is a link to a document (Doc, PPT, PDF), to a non-SharePoint website (e.g. Life@Babson, Athletics), or to a non-Babson external website (e.g. CNN, Bloomberg Businessweek), you must check the “Open in New Tab” box. Once done, click in the content area to resume editing.  If you wish to test your link you must Save & Close.
