Social Security Number (SSN) Application Process
The following instructions are specific to the immigration status of the applicant as well as to the type of work for which the applicant has been authorized.
F-1 Students with an On-Campus Job Offer:
Complete the “F-1 On-Campus Employment Form” (available at OIP). Have your hiring supervisor complete and sign the top half of the form, then bring the form and a copy of your Form I-94 to OIP. OIP will verify your job offer and your valid immigration status and sign the form within two business days.
Update your current address at the Babson portal under Smart Tools, “Immigration Information”.
Complete the SSN application (available at OIP). For item #3, select “legal alien allowed to work”.
Bring to the Social Security Office:
- Completed “F-1 On-Campus Employment Form”
- Completed SSN application
- Form I-20
- Form I-94
- Passport
Upon submission of your application, you will be issued a receipt. Keep this receipt for your records.
Note: Students with on-campus employment cannot apply for the SSN more than 30 days before the employment start date.
F-1 Students with Off-Campus Employment Authorization (OPT, CPT):
Update your current address at the Babson portal under Smart Tools, “Immigration Information”.
Complete the SSN application (available at OIP). For item #3, select “legal alien allowed to work”.
Bring to the Social Security Office:
- Proof of your employment authorization (EAD or CPT employment authorization letter)
- Completed SSN application
- Form I-20
- Form I-94
- Passport
Upon submission of your application, you will be issued a receipt. Keep this receipt for your records.
Note: Students with CPT cannot apply for the SSN more than 30 days before the employment start date.
Students on OPT cannot apply for the SSN until the employment start date.
J-1 Students with an On-Campus Job Offer:
Complete the “J-1 On-Campus Employment Form” (available at OIP). Have your hiring supervisor complete and sign the top half of the form, then bring the form and a copy of your Form I-94 to OIP. OIP will verify your job offer and your valid immigration status and sign the form within two business days. This form authorizes on-campus employment for J-1 students.
Update your current address at the Babson portal under Smart Tools, “Immigration Information”.
Complete the SSN application (available at OIP). For item #3, select “legal alien allowed to work”.
Bring to the Social Security Office:

- Completed SSN application

- Academic Training authorization letter
- Completed SSN application
- Form DS-2019
- Form I-94
- Passport
Upon submission of your application, you will be issued a receipt. Keep this receipt for your records.
J-1 Students Without Employment:
Complete and submit a “J-1 Social Security Number Letter Request Form” (available at OIP). The letter will verify your valid immigration status and eligibility for a Social Security number. The letter will be prepared within two business days.
Update your current address at the Babson portal under Smart Tools, “Immigration Information”.
Complete the SSN application (available at OIP). For item #3, select “legal alien allowed to work”.
Bring to the Social Security Office:
- J-1 SSN letter
- Completed SSN application
- Form DS-2019
- Form I-94
- Passport
Upon submission of your application, you will be issued a receipt. Keep this receipt for your records.
J-1 Visiting Scholars:
Complete and submit a “J-1 Social Security Number Letter Request Form” (available at OIP). The letter will verify your valid immigration status and eligibility for the SSN. The letter will be prepared within two business days.
Ensure that OIP has your current address.
Complete the SSN application (available at OIP). For item #3, select “legal alien allowed to work”.
Bring to the Social Security Office:
- J-1 SSN letter
- Completed SSN application
- Form DS-2019
- Form I-94
- Passport
Upon submission of your application, you will be issued a receipt. Keep this receipt for your records.
