Information for New International Students

Most international students accepted to Babson apply for F-1 student status and are issued  Form I-20.  J-1 exchange students are issued a Form DS-2019. 

If you are currently in the U.S. in a status other than F-1 or J-1, email isss@babson.edu for guidance on whether or not a change of immigration status is required. 

 Steps to Join Babson in F-1/J-1 Student Status:

  1. After Acceptance to Babson, you will request a Form I-20/Form DS-2019 from the Glavin Office

    • The Glavin Office will not process your request more than four months prior to the start date of your academic program.   J-1 exchange students will request a Form DS-2019 when they apply to Babson.  
  2. Gather the following documentation (in electronic format)

    • Passport identification and expiration page(s)
    • If applicable:
      • Current entry visa (if you are inside the U.S.)
      • Previously issued Form I-20(s) and/or Form DS-2019(s)
      • Passport identification page(s) for any dependent family member(s)
  3. Obtain a Form I-20/Form DS-2019 from Babson

  4. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee

  5. Schedule a visa interview and apply for your visa

    • Visa interview can be scheduled no earlier than 90 days before the start date on your Form I-20/Form DS-2019.
    • Canadian citizens are not required to apply for an F-1/J-1 entry visa but must still pay the SEVIS I-901 fee and request entry to the U.S. in F-1/J-1 status.
  6. Arrive at the U.S. border/Enter the U.S. in F-1/J-1 status

  7. Check-in with the Glavin Office

    • Bring your original passport, Form I-20/Form DS-2019, and entry visa.
    • Attend a required orientation session on maintaining lawful F-1/J-1 status in the U.S.
      • Orientation schedule and check-in location varies based on your program of study.
