​Babson CAPS Scope of Service Statement

The mission of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is to provide high-quality, responsive, inclusive and flexible mental health services to all eligible Babson undergraduate and graduate students, supporting whole-person wellness and empowering students to thrive in their endeavors during and beyond their time at Babson. CAPS provides three essential roles for advancing the educational mission of Babson College.

1) Clinical Services

CAPS utilizes a personally-tailored, short-term, episodic treatment approach, in which students receive assessments from our professionals, leading to problem-focused interventions and recommendations for ongoing care, which may include connection to other Babson offices & resources as well as referral to off-campus care providers. 

All eligible* students are welcome to request a consultation from a CAPS clinician. Students seek services for a wide variety of concerns, spanning from homesickness and relationship challenges to acute and ongoing mental health conditions. Each student will be treated according to their specific need, with CAPS providing full support and assistance, whether this comes in the form of short-term individual or group therapy on campus, connection to another campus resource, or assistance with connection to an off-campus provider. 

When a student’s needs require an intensive level of care, CAPS partners with the student to transition to resources within the community. Students who may require a transition of care include, but is not limited to:
  • A need, or request, to be seen more than once a week for individual therapy
  • A need, or request, for uninterrupted individual services on an ongoing basis
  • A need, or request, for a treatment modality not provided by CAPS staff
  • A need, or request, to be seen differently from what is clinically recommended by CAPS
  • Presence of one or more of the following:
    • Alcohol or other drug abuse
    • Eating Disorders
    • Chronic thoughts and or attempts of self-injury and/or suicide
  • A need, or request, for psychological testing or for evaluations to attain any type of institutional accommodations or an emotional support animal
  • A mandated assessment or treatment

2) Campus-Wide Community Education and Prevention Services

CAPS strives to educate and engage with prevention efforts across campus through community level interventions, including need-based programming, outreach and consultation. CAPS understands that many students with significant mental health needs may not access our services on their own and we therefore rely on the community at large to assist in identifying and referring students who would benefit from our services. Some of the services we provide include:
Fresh Check Day – a mental health focused, stigma reducing campus event
Suicide Prevention training
Partnering with faculty to offer stress-reduction techniques to students in their classes
Training on a wide range of mental health issues for department and student groups
Ongoing consultation with students, faculty and staff regarding mental health concerns

3) Crisis Response  

CAPS responds to the psychological effects of crisis impacting individual students as well as the campus community. We provide individual support and intervention to students impacted by a personal crisis, as well as services to members of the student body or the community at large who may have been affected by a shared crisis. 


*All full-time undergraduate and full-time graduate Babson students are eligible for CAPS services
