The College’s Academic Standards Policy
All undergraduate students at Babson College are expected to maintain a 2.0 GPA to remain in good academic standing. Exceptions are: New first year students are expected to maintain a cumulative GPA of 1.8 for their first two semesters at Babson Transfer students are expected to maintain a 1.8 GPA for their first semester at Babson The full policy is available in the 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog and Handbook.
The purpose of mid-semester warnings is to give students who are performing at less than satisfactory levels (C- or below) an indication that they need to improve in the course. Please take advantage of these warnings as an opportunity to make the improvements necessary to raise your grade.
Take advantage of the many resources on campus (Math Resource Center, Writing Center, Speech Resource Center, and Disability Services) which are available to assist you. Make appointments with the faculty members who gave you warnings. Ask for feedback on how to improve your standing. If you did poorly on an exam, bring the exam with you to go over it. If you did poorly on a paper or project, do the same. It is important to figure out what you need to focus on and if there is still time to improve your grades, but only if you put in the effort.
Withdrawing from a Class
If you are planning on withdrawing from a course, you need to see a class dean before the last day of the withdrawal period (please check the Academic Calendar for the exact date). This deadline is a firm one - if you do not withdraw from the course by the deadline, you must remain in the course. Things you must consider before withdrawing:
- If you withdraw from a course you will receive a "W" on your transcript.
- If you withdraw from a course you will not receive a refund.
- If you receive financial aid, please check with your financial aid counselor for financial aid implications.
We also recommend you discuss with your family a possible withdrawal. Withdrawal may result in your not being eligible to take a course next semester. Please check the pre-requisites for the courses you plan to take next semester. If withdrawing from the course results in being enrolled in less than 12 credits, there may be implications for private health insurance. You should discuss this with your guardian(s) or parent(s). If withdrawing from the course results in being enrolled in less than 12 credits, you will be ineligible for intercollegiate athletics. If you are an international student, you should contact the Global Programs Services prior to withdrawing from the class to discuss the impact on your visa status.
