BABSON PROFESSOR TINA OPIE CONTRIBUTES TO BOOK ON ‘POSITIVE ORGANIZING IN A GLOBAL SOCIETY’

New organizational behavior work investigates how diversity and inclusion play out in social systems

Tina Opie, Assistant Professor in the Management Division at Babson College, is a contributing writer to Positive Organizing in a Global Society; Understanding and Engaging Differences for Capacity Building and Inclusion.

The book’s research in Organizational Behavior Management unites the latest work in diversity, inclusion, and positive organizational scholarship (POS) to investigate diversity and inclusion dynamics in workplaces, schools, and communities. It covers six key areas: authenticity, equity, and inclusivity in systems, intersectional identities, relating across differences, resilience, and the role of diversity in innovation.

Positive Organizing in a Global Society is edited by Laura Morgan Roberts, Antioch University; Lynn Perry Wooten, Ross Schools of Business, University of Michigan; and Martin N. Davidson, Darden Graduate School of Business, University of Virginia.

Opie’s chapter, Authenticity and Organizational Norms: Through a Positive Organizational Scholarship (POS) Lens uses an innovative case study on hairstyle to introduce a POS lens and share the rich benefits afforded by workplace authenticity. She concludes the chapter with specific steps that organizational leaders can take to develop a more authentic workplace.

“This chapter is an easy guide for organizational leaders,” said Opie. “The essay quickly synthesizes the benefits of authenticity and gives organizational leaders specific directions on how they can create a more authentic workplace.”

Positive Organizing in a Global Society is an important work for scholars and practitioners, offering a positive framework and practical support in teaching the issues surrounding diversity and inclusion.

About Tina Opie

Tina Opie is an Assistant Professor in the Management Division at Babson College. Professor Opie obtained her Ph.D. in Management (with a concentration in organizational behavior) from New York University’s Stern School of Business, and her MBA from the Darden School of Business, University of Virginia.

Her research focuses primarily on how organizations can create workplaces that successfully leverage individual difference and convey respect for individual contributions. Specifically, she studies the conditions that motivate peripheral members of workgroups (i.e. individuals who perceive that their input on how to do the group’s task is devalued by teammates) to engage. She also studies whether discrimination against overweight people can be reduced by abandoning a focus on appearance and adopting a focus on health. The hope is that this work will help to make a valid case for attempts to reduce obesity discrimination in organizations.
