BABSON PROFESSORS MANCHA AND TAILLARD NAMED TO POETS & QUANTS BEST 40 UNDER 40 PROFESSORS 2017 LIST
Babson College Assistant Professor Ruben Mancha and Assistant professor Jérôme Taillard are among the 40 top business school professors under 40 years of age according on this year’s list published by Poets & Quants.
They are the latest Babson faculty to be honored by Poets & Quants. The others are:
According to Poets & Quants, “Mancha is a motivator. Like any great coach, he brings out the best in his students by knowing how to read them. Like a chameleon, he adapts to their needs. Sometimes, he can breathe fire-and-brimstone to take the intensity up a notch. Other times, he is the understanding and supportive big brother who’ll re-assure his pupils that everything will turn out just fine. ‘Professor Mancha’s passion to teach is contagious,’ writes one of his students. ‘It just makes one want to study the subject. The amount of effort and personal interest the professor shows in every student is commendable.’”
Mancha is an Assistant Professor of Information Systems in the Technology, Operations, and Information Management division.
Mancha's research is in the areas of digital innovation, business analytics, and sustainability. His research has been published in journals such as Decision Support Systems, Journal of Environmental Psychology, International Journal of Technology Transfer and Commercialisation, Journal of Information Technology Management, and Journal of Intelligent systems in Accounting, Finance and Management; and has contributed essays to a number of edited books, such as Contemporary Perspectives in Data Mining II and Encyclopedia of Research Design.
He teaches information technology courses at Olin Graduate School of Management and business analytics courses at Babson Executive Education.
Before completing his doctoral studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Dr. Mancha held consulting and research positions in the food and biotechnology industries in Spain and the U.S.
According to Poets & Quants, “’Many professors struggle to make a class enjoyable, without making it too simple. To be approachable, without being goofy. To exhibit their technical knowledge, without losing the student. Yet Jerome managed to do all of that and more. Each class was a treat.’ That’s quite an endorsement. And there were plenty more where that came from. Yet, for someone who read his first financial analyst report at the tender age of 15 and was instantly hooked on finance, all of this seems to come easy. Taillard’s courses are defined by this balance, rigorous yet accessible, theoretical but also applicable. Ask 20 Babson students what makes Taillard special and you’ll get 20 answers. In between, they will all touch on one gift: his ability to reach students in a discipline known for convoluted frameworks. He does that by breaking down formidable chunks of information into digestible bits…always with a smile and words of encouragement.”
Jérôme Taillard earned his PhD in Finance from The Ohio State University in 2010. He also received a graduate degree in Economics from the Study Center in Gerzensee (Switzerland) and his undergraduate degree in Mathematics applied to Finance (magna cum laude) from the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland.
He teaches Introduction to Financial Management in the full-time MBA program as well as at undergraduate level at Babson College. He previously taught Corporate Finance at the graduate and undergraduate level at the Carroll School of management for which he received a school-wide teaching award in 2012. He also taught International Finance at the Fisher College of Business.
His main research interests are in corporate finance. Currently, he is doing research in the areas of risk management, innovation, litigation, corporate governance and the oil and gas industry. He has published his research in the Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, Management Science, Journal of Corporate Finance and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.
He has served as consultant to one of the largest Swiss brokerage firm on assessing the trading behavior and performance of their clients. He also does consulting for the Global Association of Risk Managers (GARP).
