BABSON COLLEGE TAPS ADL OF NEW ENGLAND TO FURTHER STRENGTHEN DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION EFFORTS
Babson College, a private business school with one of the most intentionally diverse student populations in the nation, today announced it is partnering with the Anti-Defamation League of New England (ADL) to bring the renowned A CAMPUS OF DIFFERENCE™ program to its campus.
At an event held today at ADL headquarters in Boston, Babson President Leonard A. Schlesinger joined with ADL Regional Director Robert Trestan to present an overview of the new partnership between Babson and ADL. Kicked off earlier this month as ADL staff members arrived at Babson to assess the College’s multiple diversity and inclusion programs, Babson is working with the ADL to further strengthen and enhance its programs and policies to ensure faculty, students, and staff can more effectively interact on Babson’s diverse campus.
Ranked No. 5 in the country by The Princeton Review for “Lots of Race/Class Interaction”, Babson’s undergraduate student body hails from 74 countries and speaks 48 languages; more than 40 percent hold international passports. Further, Babson's diverse population is extremely active, as evidenced by the dozens of student clubs and organizations on campus that provide opportunities for multicultural and faith-based learning and interactions.
During the event, President Schlesinger relayed to the community leaders present what he had learned from a member of the Babson College Class of 1980 that led him to contact the ADL about a potential partnership. Through the alumnus, President Schlesinger discovered incidents of anti-Semitism that occurred on Babson’s campus in 1978. Public documents confirm that, in November 1978, Babson students used and displayed anti-Semitic images and language prior to a game between the Babson and Brandeis Men’s Soccer teams.
“While I am confident that the institutional response to these hateful incidents would be vastly different today, I have been greatly disturbed to learn about these anti-Semitic activities and the handling of them by the College,” said Babson President Len Schlesinger. “Although it is some 35 years later, as President of this institution, I believe I have a fundamental responsibility to respond to what I have learned, including extending my most sincere public apology to members of the Babson and Brandeis communities for the unconscionable behaviors they experienced.”
President Schlesinger commissioned A CAMPUS OF DIFFERENCE ™ in honor of the Feldman Family; Stuart Feldman, a member of Babson’s Class of 1980, played an instrumental role in making President Schlesinger aware of the 1978 incidents and understanding the painful effects they have had on members of both the Babson and Brandeis communities.

What is needed today is experience working closely with people from different cultures and countries, bridging differences and leveraging the strengths each person brings to the table. My hope is that, by partnering with the ADL, we further strengthen and enhance our efforts to build a community of inclusiveness and ensure the incidents of 1978 are never repeated.”
