BABSON COLLEGE AND BOSTON MAYOR THOMAS M. MENINO KICK-OFF THIRD ANNUAL LEMONADE DAY BOSTON, BRINGING THE LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE OF STARTING A BUSINESS TO 2,000 BOSTON AREA KIDS
Babson College, the No. 1 ranked business school for entrepreneurship in the country, and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, officially launched Lemonade Day Boston 2013 as more than 2,000 curriculum-filled Lemonade Day Boston backpacks began making their way to kids in the Boston area. Babson is once again championing Lemonade Day Boston, a free, real-life learning program that teaches children not only how to operate their own business using a lemonade stand, but also imparts fundamental lessons about life, success and personal achievement.
Now in its 3rd year, Lemonade Day Boston will involve up to 2,000 elementary and middle school students from Allston, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale, Roxbury, and beyond, thanks to Babson, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and more than 40 area companies, foundations, agencies and philanthropists. This year, Lemonade Day Boston has expanded its reach during the critical out-of-school-time period by working with more than 30 after school programs across Boston. Assisting, teaching, and supporting the children will be an army of partner organizations, educators, mentors, community organizations, businesses and schools.
“When we teach students entrepreneurship, we teach them to invent their future,” stated Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “Lemonade Day Boston is a wonderful, important way to help Boston’s young people become part of our innovation economy.”
Lemonade Day Boston volunteers roll up their sleeves to assemble ‘entrepreneur’ kits for more than 2,000 Boston area kids.
The program complements Babson’s mission to educate leaders who can create great economic and social value everywhere. The rich curriculum is designed to foster confidence in the young participants and help them to think entrepreneurially. The Lemonade Day lessons reinforce and promote financial literacy, creativity, goal-setting, leadership and collaboration skills-- all while having kids experience pride and accomplishment as they launch a real-life business venture. One of the most exciting pieces is that kids gain hands-on understanding around earning money, paying back loans, managing savings and sharing profits. They also learn the value of giving back by sharing a portion of their earnings with local charities.
“At the heart of Lemonade Day is the most important lesson we can ever teach our children ─ to take charge of their own lives, to realize their unique potential, and to become the leaders of their own future,” said Babson President Len Schlesinger. “My wife Phyllis and I are extremely pleased to support such a life-changing program that has expanded this year to reach even greater numbers of Boston’s school-aged children. By spreading entrepreneurship to our youngest generation of learners, we unleash a transformational force for change.”
The children’s efforts will culminate on Saturday, May 4, 2013, in Boston when they launch lemonade stands across the city of Boston.
Babson will celebrate Lemonade Day Boston’s stars and their successes on Friday night, May 17th, at a Lemonade Day Entrepreneur Fair to be held at the Boston Children’s Museum. The event, sponsored by BNY Mellon and supported by Boloco, will feature, Ty Allan Jackson, founder of Big Head Books and author of the highly acclaimed children's book, Danny Dollar Millionaire Extraordinaire - The Lemonade Escapade, who will talk in a fun way about the power of reading and the importance of building confidence and self-esteem. Jackson is the winner of The Martin Luther King Content of Character Award.
For the first time this year, Lemonade day is partnering with Google for Entrepreneurs on more than 50 projects around the country to empower millions of students to become entrepreneurs. About Lemonade Day
Lemonade Day is a part of Prepared 4 Life, a nonprofit that provides fun, proactive and experiential programs infused with life skills, character education and entrepreneurship. Lemonade Day was born in Houston in 2007, and was inspired by the lessons local entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael Holthouse taught his young daughter and her friend when they set up a lemonade stand. Since then it has grown to a nationwide program, operating in over 30 cities and engaging more than 150,000 youth.
