NFL PLAYERS RECEIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRAINING FROM PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE TRUST AND BABSON COLLEGE
The Trust, powered by the NFL Players Association, has partnered with Babson College to create a “Basic Training - It’s My Business” program to assist former NFL players with deciding if owning, partnering, or investing in a business is a sound career move.
"Basic Training - It's My Business" Program
The three-day program is designed to assist former players with understanding the role of a business owner, operator, or investor.
The program assists former players with:
- Assessing their interest in business
- Recognizing what they already know about running a business
- Understanding the complexities and challenges of business
- Discerning their business focus: startup, franchise, partnership, investor, or foundation
“Players have a strong belief in themselves,” says Babson Professor Fred Nanni, faculty director. “They know they’ve got to keep pushing. That’s a big part of being a successful entrepreneur.”
The first sessions in this program took place on June 29-July 2 and August 24- 27, 2014, at the Babson Executive Conference Center.
Demand has been strong for these first installments of “Basic Training,” with 50 former players expressing interest in the program's initial 25 slots. In the future, Babson Executive and Enterprise Education will offer another course -- one for former players who already own a business.
During the course of three days, “Basic Training” lays out what starting a business involves. The program hopes to serve as a reality check. “We are very frank with players,” Bahati VanPelt, Executive Director of The Trust, says. “Having a great idea and a great business are two separate things. Just because you like to eat out doesn’t mean you should open a restaurant.”
