The Sofi Tucker Foundation and Sheamoisture Fund Scholarship For Babson's Summer Study Program
The Sofi Tucker Foundation and SheaMoisture Community Commerce have invested in Babson College’s Summer Study program to sponsor 10 high school women from around the world. The SheaMoisture Community Commerce Scholarship at Babson College seeks to empower the next generation of women to drive change in themselves and their communities. Richelieu Dennis ‘91, CEO of Sundial Brands and Babson College trustee and alumnus, created The Sofi Tucker Foundation to honor his grandmother. Sofi Tucker started selling shea nuts at the village market in Sierra Leone in 1912. Through the foundation, SheaMoisture continues her legacy by investing in aspiring female entrepreneurs.
SheaMoisture Community Commerce Scholars represent countries around the world, including the United States, Pakistan, Costa Rica, and Rwanda. In their admission essays, scholars voiced interests in social issues such as sustainability practices, gender equality, and access to education. Passionate to create the change they want to see now, 70 percent of incoming scholars already have started a business or founded a club. “I was always described as a bossy stubborn girl who loved to lead,” recounts one scholarship recipient. “These traits have grown and strengthened over the years, but the fact still stays the same, I love to be in charge.”
At Babson, these extraordinary young women will certainly have the opportunity to sharpen their leadership skills and cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset to address social, economic, and environmental problems. Just like Tucker and Dennis, they will learn to create a lasting positive impact in their communities and beyond.
Babson Summer Study
Babson’s Summer Study is a residential program for rising high school juniors and seniors that gives them real-world experience while building their business knowledge and entrepreneurial skills.
This four-week, on-campus course is an immersive opportunity for students to focus on their growth as entrepreneurs. Students will be introduced to Entrepreneurial Thought & Action® (ET&A)—Babson’s renowned methodology that encourages combining reflection, experimentation, and analysis with action—all while building leadership, communication, presentation, and critical thinking skills in a hands-on, team-based environment. Throughout the program, students will work to conceptualize a new venture that creates meaningful social and economic value.
Since 1912, SheaMoisture has made its award-winning, shea butter-based skin and hair care products using family recipes handed down from founder and CEO Richelieu Dennis' grandmother, Sofi Tucker. As a young mother, Sofi sold her handcrafted shea butter creations to support her family in Sierra Leone and became known as a healer throughout the countryside. Products are formulated to meet each individual’s specific skin and hair needs and are made with natural and certified organic ingredients. No Parabens, No Mineral Oil, No Formaldehyde, No Phthalates, No DEA, No Propylene, No Paraffin, No Petroleum. Shea butter is ethically-sourced from 15 women’s cooperatives in Northern Ghana, as part of parent company Sundial Brands’ purpose-driven Community Commerce business model. Through Community Commerce, the company creates opportunities for sustainable social and economic empowerment throughout its supply chain and communities in the United States and around the world, focusing on entrepreneurship, women’s empowerment, education and wellness. A certified B Corp with a Fair for Life social and fair trade certification, the company engages in ethical and cruelty-free business practices and manufactures its products at its state-of-the-art facilities in Long Island, NY.
