2020 BCERC Coronavirus Update

Letter from Conference Director Andrew Zacharakis

Dear Invited Authors,
It is with deep regret that we inform you of the cancellation of the 40th annual BCERC that was scheduled to take place June 3-6, 2020 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. However, the Doctoral Consortium will run virtually; more information will be forthcoming to the accepted doctoral students shortly. Over the past few weeks, the BCERC leadership and staff have been monitoring developments with COVID-19 and also taking into consideration your survey feedback. Thank you for voicing your opinion. We read every comment and took them into consideration. The most common thread amongst the feedback is the value participants place on the dynamic venue BCERC creates for academics to network and to have spirited dialogue. For many reasons, we feel that an online venue would not be able to accomplish this. We look forward to seeing you in TUM for 2021 BCERC. Thank you to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for their flexibility to offer to host 2023 BCERC. We will be sending out a link to a platform that will host all the accepted summaries in the beginning of June. On that site, we will have a preview video of the 2021 BCERC in TUM. We are moving forward with the 2020 FER publication as planned, thank you for submitting your summaries. Please review the following timeline and information.

Paper submissions: All authors with an accepted abstract in the paper category have until April 24, 2020 to submit their full 6-page papers. These will be reviewed by the Board of Reviewers and the top 40 papers will be published in the 2020 FER. If your paper was not selected as one of the top 40, your summary will be published in the 2020 FER.

Interactive paper: Those who were accepted as an interactive paper or interactive paper with a possibility to become a paper do not need to complete a 6-page paper. Due to the circumstances, both interactive paper categories will have their summaries published in the 2020 FER as an interactive paper summary.

Online viewing of papers, summaries and interactive papers: We will be sending out a link to a platform that will host all the accepted summaries at the beginning of June. More information will be sent to you once it is finalized.

Best Paper Awards: Thank you to the generosity of the following sponsors, the best paper awards will be awarded and presented at the 2021 BCERC in TUM, Germany.
• The Babson College Bertarelli Family Award - $1000 for excellence in research on the topic of Family Entrepreneurship.
• The National Federation for Independent Business (NFIB) Award - $3,000 for the best paper on a general topic in Entrepreneurship.

What is the status of 2020 BCERC?
We have made the difficult decision that the 2020 BCERC will not be an in-person conference. We are diligently working on an asynchronous option for 2020 BCERC where presenters would upload presentations and attendees would be able to review the presentations at their leisure.  A survey requesting input from all invited authors was sent today and responses were requested to be completed by Friday, April 10th.  The Doctoral Consortium will be held virtually, details are being discussed and will be communicated to the Doctoral Consortium within the next few days.

How do I cancel my registration for 2020 BCERC?
If you have already registered for the conference, you must cancel your registration to receive a credit card refund.  If you paid via check or wire, please email bcerc@babson.edu.  To cancel your registration, please follow these steps         

  1. Find your Registration Confirmation email that was sent to you from the BCERC Team (BCERC@babson.edu) with the subject: “Thank You for registering for the 2020 BCERC”
  2. In that email, under the heading of “Cancellation Policy” copy your invoice/confirmation number and click on the link provided in the email.
  3. Follow the instructions for cancellation.
  4. You will receive a credit on your credit card statement within a few days.

Do I need to cancel my hotel and airline registration for 2020 BCERC?
You are responsible for canceling your reservations.  Hotel reservations not canceled will remain open and will incur no-show penalties. If you have booked at the Hilton, Knoxville, please go to the Hilton website to cancel, or call the Hilton, Knoxville directly at +1-888-225-9664.  If you have made alternate arrangements, please cancel them directly.  Remember to cancel your airline tickets if you had made reservations.

Can I still add 2020 BCERC to my CV?
If you were an accepted author to 2020 BCERC, please feel free to add the following line to your CV:
e.g., Name (2020) Title of paper.  Accepted for presentation at 2020 Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference, Knoxville, TN.  Conference canceled due to coronavirus.

When is the 6-Paged Paper due?
The deadline for submission of the 6-page Abridged Paper is April 24, 2020. (Please Note: Interactive Papers are not required to submit a full paper.) To submit your 1-page summary, please click here for the paper submission site.

What is the status of 2020 BCERC?
At this time, we are proceeding with the planning of 2020 BCERC. If we are unable to host the conference, we are considering options for hosting it virtually. As decisions are made, we will provide updates via email and on our website www.bcerc.com.

Will the 2020 Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research (FER) be published?
The publication of the FER will proceed as scheduled. Historically the FER is a compilation of conference proceedings, but if we are unable to host the conference, all papers and summaries will be considered regardless of attendance. The works in the FER exemplify new frontiers in the discipline of entrepreneurship and we are committed to promoting this work in 2020.

When are my Summary and Paper due?
The deadline for submission of the 1-page 400 word summary will still be Wednesday, March 25, 2020 and the 6-page Abridged Paper is April 24, 2020. (Please Note: Interactive Papers are not required to submit a full paper.) To submit your 1-page summary, please click here for the paper submission site. If we do NOT receive your summary by March 25, we will assume that you intend to withdraw the paper

Will 2020 BCERC be canceled because of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)?
As of March 12, 2020, BCERC is proceeding as planned. This week, BCERC staff and leadership met with organizers from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville community to discuss the options and solicit input. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on the meeting status and relevant policies on the BCERC website. If the 2020 BCERC is canceled you will receive an email from us as soon as the decision is made. Please check the BCERC website for updates.

Will my registration be refunded? 
If BCERC is canceled, registrants are entitled to a full refund. If BCERC goes ahead, but your university prohibits travel or if there are travel restrictions for your country, you may provide documentation for a full refund.

Do I have to register by the presenter deadline of March 25?
The deadline for registering for BCERC has been extended to April 24, 2020. 

Should I book my transportation yet?
If you have not yet purchased transportation tickets to BCERC, we recommend you do NOT make any bookings, unless the fare is refundable. BCERC will not refund individual travel costs.  Check with your airline regarding their refund policy.

What if I was accepted to the conference and cannot attend?
We are currently looking into the possibility of remote attendance to 2020 BCERC.  This will only be an option if travel is prohibited by your university or country due to the Coronavirus situation.  An email will be sent to all invited authors once decisions are made about remote attendance.  We encourage you to periodically check www.bcerc.com for updated information.  

What if I booked a hotel room and cannot attend?
You may cancel your hotel reservation at the Hilton, Knoxville up to 72 hours prior to your arrival with no penalties. It is your responsibility to cancel your reservation. If you booked at the Hilton, Knoxville please call +01- (865) 523-2300 to cancel.  If you booked other accommodations, contact the hotel directly for their cancellation policy.

How can I stay informed about the status of the meeting?
The BCERC website will be updated periodically if there are any changes.  If it becomes necessary to cancel BCERC, we will immediately notify all registrants and invited authors via email.

Where can I find more information about COVID-19?
Please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 information resource for current advice. If you are traveling to BCERC from outside the US we recommend you also monitor travel advice from your national public health authorities.
