CHOOSING A SECURE PASSWORD

Your username and password allow you to log into a variety of ITSD services where security is extremely important. Someone who has your password can access your private information such as billing, grades or they could send email as you. It is therefore crucial that you not share your password with anyone and that you create a password that is not easily guessed.

When creating a password, keep the following tips in mind:

• Your password must be between 6 and 12 characters long.
• Include both uppercase and lowercase letters.
• Include both letters and numbers.
• Do not use your date of birth, social security number, or child or pet's name.
• Do not include your username, in any form.
• Avoid words that can be found in a dictionary.

Once you have created a secure password, use these tips to protect it:

• Memorize your password.
• If you must write down your new password because you are afraid you'll forget it, then:
  • Never write your username and your password on the same piece of paper.
  • Do not place a written copy of your password on the side of your monitor, under your keyboard, etc.
  • Destroy the written copy as soon as you have memorized your password.
• Do not allow anyone to look over your shoulder while you are entering your password.
• Change your password often.
• Change your password immediately if it has been compromised.

Note: Users are responsible for all activity and transactions performed under their username so you should never give out your password. If you think your password has been compromised, change it immediately.
