Kaplan Sustainability Award

The Kaplan Sustainability Award was established in 2013 and created to honor Shelley Kaplan, who, in his 12 years of service, led the development of Babson College’s sustainability program, creating significant environmental, social, and economic value at Babson.

Kaplan was able to incorporate sustainability into all aspects of his work, making a profound and lasting impact not only in the energy, waste, and water that was reduced during his tenure but also by providing education and awareness of this important topic of sustainability to all who have worked with him.

Criteria

The Kaplan Sustainability Award is awarded to groups or individuals (faculty or staff) at Babson College who have advanced Sustainability at Babson in one of two areas:

1. Sustainability in Practice
2. Sustainability in Research/Academics

Kaplan Sustainability in Practice Award

This award will go to a group or individual that has actively put their sustainability ideas into action at Babson. Written nominations should explicitly address how the nominee has visibly demonstrated:

• The ability to instill the inclination to act in others
• Leading the charge on programs or initiatives that help Babson become more responsible in the areas of social justice, economic responsibility, and environmental protection
• A consistency in personally sustainable behaviors including any or all of the following: inclusion; health and wellness; waste reduction; and resource conservation

Kaplan Sustainability in Research/Academics Award

This award will go to a group or individual that has conducted research that attempts to bring clarity and understanding to areas of social justice, economic responsibility, and environmental protection. Written nominations should explicitly address how the nominee has visibly demonstrated:

• Original and practical research that has either been implemented or could be easily implemented
• How the research is attempting to provide economic gains to society
• How the research design encourages and advances the protection of the environment
• Potential broader social impacts and benefits to society (and developing countries, if possible)
