Bio

Sinan Erzurumlu is an Associate Professor of Innovation and Operations Management at Babson College. Professor Erzurumlu’s research and teaching interests are at the confluence of technology and operations management, sustainability, entrepreneurship and innovation strategy. Sinan was named among “The Best 40 B-School Profs Under the Age of 40” in the 2015 Poets & Quants ranking of Business School professors. He also received “2016 Kaplan Award for Sustainability in Academics and Research” at Babson College. At Babson Sinan studies the theory and practice of innovation, operations management and entrepreneurship to stimulate sustainable development and growth in two ways. First, he takes an operational lens to innovation for startup and growth, with a focus on how entrepreneurial firms and startups can manage resources, know-how and skills to transform existing knowledge into new knowledge, technology, and creative outputs. Second, he explores sustainability and social impact of business model innovations in terms of their impact on creating environmental/social value and economic growth. His research offers practical insights for innovation-driven organizations to make better decisions and manage the risks of development and growth. Through collaborations with academics and practitioners, Sinan participates in applied research projects in a number of different industries including mining, clean tech & energy, and high tech. He uses qualitative methods, like design thinking to address new insights about a problem, and mathematical and empirical models to make strategic decisions with rigor. His research has been published in several leading journals including Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Production and Operations Management, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Omega, and Resources Policy. Prior to joining Babson, Sinan has worked as a project-based consultant for Dell on service operations and as a research engineer for Center for Space Research at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his PhD in Management Science and Information Systems from McCombs School of Business and M.S. in Operations Research/Industrial Engineering from Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a B.S. in electrical and electronics engineering with distinction from Bogazici University in Turkey. Sinan's selected papers can be viewed at SSRN and ResearchGate.
