The Presidential Search

The Babson College Board of Trustees established a Presidential Search Committee to conduct the search for a successor to President Leonard A. Schlesinger, who announced his intention to step down from his position as Babson’s 12th president at the end of the 2012–2013 academic year.

Chaired by Trustee and former governor Craig Benson ’77, H’03, the Presidential Search Committee comprised of trustees, faculty, and staff, appointed based on their breadth of expertise and knowledge of Babson and the qualities required of its next president. The committee worked to solicit input from the Babson community and conducted a comprehensive and rigorous search to identify the right leader to serve as Babson’s 13th president. To maintain the integrity of the process, Search Committee members agreed at the outset that their work would be maintained in strict confidence and that they would not disclose information to others on or off-campus about the search process, about particular candidates or about the deliberative process that was employed. This allowed candidates to trust that the privacy of their respective applications would be protected. The Chair of the Search Committee was charged with coordination of all internal and external communications. Industry-leading Recruiting Firm Hired to Assist Search

The Babson College Board of Trustees retained recruiting firm Korn/Ferry International to assist the Presidential Search Committee’s efforts to identify Babson’s 13th president. Korn/Ferry International is a premier global provider of talent management solutions, with a presence throughout the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Community Input

To ensure the community's voice was heard throughout the search process, the Presidential Search Committee held on-campus listening sessions, web chats, and provided an online form for members of the Babson community and beyond to provide input on the qualities and characteristics the committee should seek in identifying the next Babson president, to identify potential candidates, and to provide feedback and comments. In particular, the committee invited the Babson community to provide input on the following key questions:

  • What leadership qualities should the next president possess in order to build upon the strong academic, fiscal, and reputational position Babson enjoys today?
  • What do you think are the most significant opportunities and challenges the next president will need to address?
  • What additional considerations should the Presidential Search Committee be mindful of throughout this process?

Over 170 candidates were identified by the Committee, members of the Babson community, and the search firm working with the College. A pool of candidates was brought to the Search Committee for consideration. Materials were posted during the search and each member of the Search Committee had the opportunity to participate in deliberations throughout the process. The Committee evaluated each candidate in light of the Position Description.
