Academic Division: Entrepreneurship
William B. Gartner is the Bertarelli Foundation Distinguished Professor of Family Entrepreneurship at Babson College. He is recognized as a leading scholar in the field of entrepreneurship by such awards as the 2005 Swedish Entrepreneurship Foundation International Award for outstanding contributions to entrepreneurship and small business research, the 2013 Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division Foundational Paper Award, the 2016 Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division Dedication to Entrepreneurship Award, and selection as a 2022 USASBE Justin G. Longenecker Fellow which is the highest recognition that the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) gives to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the development, furtherance, and benefit of small and medium businesses.

His scholarship spans a wide array of topics in the entrepreneurship field: entrepreneurship as practice, the social construction of the future, varieties of value creation and appropriation, “translating entrepreneurship” across cultures and countries, the poetics of exchange, the demographics and characteristics of entrepreneurial families, and the influence of legacy on family entrepreneurship. He is currently a Special Issue Editor for ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT on the topics of “Fiction and the Entrepreneurial Imagination” and “Rural Entrepreneurship in Times of Transformation” and a Special Issue Editor for ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVES on “Echoes of the Past: Capturing the Influence of Legacy on Individuals, Families and Organization.”

His teaching focuses on ways that entrepreneurship creates value for others. His workshops with families explore how entrepreneurial legacies can lead to new innovations in family businesses. His seminars and courses in rural entrepreneurship explore how tourism can be used for economic development in environmentally sustainable ways. He is keenly interested in how fiction engages the imagination to enable individuals to act with courage and generosity. He has developed many exercises to further this perspective and hopes to develop more of them in the future.
