Funding the Nation’s First Major Off-Shore Wind Farm

Álvaro Ortega Sebastián MBA’15 is the chief financial officer of Vineyard Wind, a project that may revolutionize the way people power their homes in the U.S. Recently approved by the Biden administration, the project will install up to 62 turbines in the Atlantic Ocean about 12 nautical miles off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, to generate 800 megawatts of electricity—enough to power about 400,000 homes.

Empowering Entrepreneurs in Haiti

Rebecca Obounou MBA’17 has observed that the aid Haiti receives keeps Haiti dependent on outside assistance. For example, the practice of “rice dumping,” where the U.S. flooded Haiti with subsidized rice, is widely criticized for wiping out local agriculture. That’s why Obounou founded Communities for Haitian Entrepreneurs and Startups, a nonprofit that supports small business owners in rural Haiti through funding, education, and mentoring.

A Successful MD Takes Action with an MBA

“Health care is lagging behind. … As I was going through the MBA program, I was able to take what I was learning … and go back and apply it.” As a result, Dr. Ricardo Cury MBA’21 oversaw the digital transformation of his department. He also helped to develop an AI-powered algorithm that analyzes reports from CT scans, searching for keywords related to COVID-19. It could be used to track and predict COVID-19 outbreaks.

Preshika Jain MBA’21 was working in tech, leading business development for food and ed tech companies, when she learned of the closing of a low-income girls’ school where she taught for six years. It provoked her to act. “I want to continue to learn more and to find solutions that create equity and sustainability in education, so that there is never an occasion that a child does not have access to education or that access is taken away.”
