David Blodgett
- Associate Professor
​Dr. Blodgett joined Babson College in September of 2012 and currently teaches Biotechnology in the Math and Science Division. He received his B.A. in Chemistry and Spanish from Assumption College in 2002, his Ph.D. in Biomedical Science in 2007, and M.S. in Clinical Investigation in 2012 at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Blodgett's research interests center on glucose metabolism and the dysfunction caused by diabetes. In the lab, he investigates gene expression changes in alpha and beta cells from human pancreatic islets donors who do not have diabetes or have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The goal of these studies is to identify genes that positively or negatively affect beta cell function, which could eventually become therapeutic targets. His research has been accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals such as: Diabetes, Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Obesity, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of General Physiology, and Biochemistry. Dr. Blodgett is generally interested in educating the broader community about the role of science and technology in everyone's daily lives and looks forward to establishing a student centered research program on campus.

Joanna Carey

- Debi and Andy Butler Term Chair
Dr. Carey joined Babson in 2017 as an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics, Analytics, Science, and Technology Division. She currently teaches Case Studies in Ecological Management (NST 2020), and Oceanography (NST 1060). Her research focuses on answering fundamental questions regarding ecosystem processes in the context of rapid global change. She examines how human activities are altering carbon, nitrogen, and silicon cycling along the land-ocean continuum (forests, rivers, salt marshes, and estuaries) in temperate and Arctic ecosystems. Dr. Carey received her Ph.D. in Earth Science from Boston University (2013), her M.S. in Environmental Science from Yale University (2007), and her B.S. in Environmental Policy & Planning from Virginia Tech (2005). Before joining Babson in 2017, Dr. Carey completed several post-doctoral fellowships, including an NSF Earth Science Fellowship and a USGS Powell Center Fellowship, both hosted at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA.

Eric Wai Kin Chan

Eric empirically studies the effects of education, labor, and housing policy on family and individual outcomes. He is interested in using experimental and quasi-experimental methods to provide causal evidence that is relevant for policy and practice. Further, he wishes to extend the machine learning research on categorical measurements of images and texts to further policy research. Eric received his MA, MPhil, and PhD from Teachers College, Columbia University and his BS from Babson College.

Richard Cleary

Professor Rick Cleary is a statistician and mathematician with research and consulting interests in a variety of fields including sports and education. Prior to coming to Babson College in 2013, Professor Cleary taught at St. Michael's College in Vermont, Cornell University, Bentley University, and Harvard University. He has held leadership positions in the Mathematical Association of America, including six years on the Executive Committee as Associate Treasurer. He currently co-chairs the Upper Division Pathways initiative for TPSE Math, see link below. Professor Cleary enjoys working with teachers at all levels to improve statistics education and he gives frequent talks and workshops on ways to encourage statistical thinking. He has been active in the Wellesley community as a youth sports coach and through service on school councils.

Julie De Zutter
- Assistant Teaching Professor
Dr. De Zutter is a research scientist in the lab of Dr. Anthony Carruthers in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. She received her B.S. in Biology from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell in 1991, worked in the Biotech industry for several years before earning her Ph. D. in Biochemistry from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2001. Dr. De Zutter's research focuses on studying the structure and function of the GLUT family of passive glucose transport proteins. A hallmark of cancer is an increase in glucose metabolism seen in highly proliferating cells. GLUT1 (the blood brain barrier transporter), GLUT3 (the neuronal transporter) and in some cases GLUT12 expression has been shown to be significantly increased in rapidly dividing cells. One potential strategy to exploit this metabolic characteristic of cancer cells is to screen and characterize potential chemical agents that inhibit glucose transport across the cell membrane both in vitro and in vivo. These studies will not only help to understand GLUT regulation in health and disease, but will also provide potential therapeutic targets for controlling glucose availability when perturbed by diseases, such as cancer. Prior to her arrival at Babson, she has taught courses at Becker and Dean College as an Adjunct Professor. Dr. De Zutter is interested in the science of biotechnology and the social, political and ethical questions that it raises, and promoting scientific literacy in the broader community.

Farbod Farhadi
- Associate Professor
Dr. Farbod Farhadi is an Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics and Quantitative Methods at Babson College. He received his Ph.D. in Management Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Isenberg School of Management. His research interests are applications of data science and mathematical programming in healthcare services, aviation and transportation services, and complex network systems. His research articles have been published in the European Journal of Operational Research, Health Care Management Science, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Computers & Industrial Engineering, and Transportation Research Part E: Logistics and Transportation Review.
Dr. Farhadi brings his expertise from industry where he held multiple positions including, project planning manager, and lead data scientist. In his consulting capacity he has worked with various public and private clients to build business intelligence systems using advance analytics and predictive modeling tools. He has lead multiple consulting projects including partnerships with the Rhode Island Department of State, addressing impact of COVID 19 on the economy, and outlining a 10-year business and economic projections.
Prior to joining Babson College, Professor Farhadi was an Associate Professor of Management and the Director of the MBA program at the Mario J Gabelli School of Business at Roger Williams University, where he initiated the business analytics program and served as the advisor of the RWU Analytics Club. Sarah Quinn Foster
- Assistant Professor
Dr. Sarah Foster joined Babson in 2020 and is currently teaching Oceanography (NST1060) in the Math and Science Division. Dr. Foster's research explores the response of coastal marine ecosystems to anthropogenic changes (such as nutrient pollution and climate change) across a variety of geographic and temporal scales. Dr. Foster earned her PhD (2019) and MA (2013) from Boston University in Earth Sciences with a certificate in Biogeosciences, and her BA from Hampshire College (2006). Prior to joining Babson, Dr. Foster taught at Boston University and worked for the United States Geological Survey in Menlo Park, CA on their long-term water-quality monitoring program in San Francisco Bay. As a marine ecologist and science educator she is dedicated to sharing her love of science and ocean ecosystems to diverse groups of people through outreach programs, workshops, and classroom teaching. She is also committed to supporting increased visibility and opportunity for historically underrepresented groups in STEM and academia in general. Dr. Foster is excited to contribute to the Babson community through education and basic research that helps to build a more sustainable and regenerative future for the planet.

Prof. Giunta received his B. S. and M. A. In Mathematics and Adolescent Education from Adelphi University in 2011 and 2012. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Mathematics Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. He is an avid teacher and mentor to students. Most recently, his research interests focus on the statistics education and pedagogy around classroom dynamics.

In addition to teaching over 20 courses at Babson College, William Huss has taught courses at Bentley College and Framingham State as well as numerous professional seminars on Strategic Business Planning and Consulting. He is published extensively in conference proceedings on topics related to market planning, forecasting, and market research. Before teaching, as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at XENERGY, Inc. he provided marketing support, information services and energy efficiency consulting to many of the largest utilities and energy suppliers in North America.

Nathaniel Karst

Dr. Nathan Karst received his B.S. in electrical and computer engineering from Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in 2007 and his doctorate in applied mathematics from Cornell in 2011. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2017 and Professor in 2022.
Nathan is an avid teacher and researcher, having won the Dean's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2014 and the Dean's Award for Excellence in Scholarship in 2015. His research has focused on the role of nonlinear dynamics in microvascular networks and various problems in surface hydrology.
In recent years, Nathan has co-chaired the Babson Faculty Research Fund and the Appointments Decision-Making Body (governing contract renewals, tenure, and promotion), and currently serves as chair of the Mathematics, Analytics, Science, and Technology Division.

Davit Khachatryan

Dr. Davit Khachatryan is an applied statistician with research interests in applications of machine learning/natural language processing in corporate innovation and educational technologies. Davit's research appeared in journals such as Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (Series C), The American Statistician, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Scientometrics, and Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education. Davit is the author of cases Amarcord Incorporated: Combatting Money-Laundering Using Data Analytics; Fargo Health Group: Managing the Demand for Medical Examinations Using Predictive Analytics; and Jenni Maze Limited: Enhancing Call Center Performance Using Predictive Analytics, which since their publication have been used across various institutions for time series education. In addition, Davit designed and developed Playmeans – a software web application (app) that promotes inclusive and engaging data science education through audio-visual analysis of data acquired in real time from Spotify (https://playfuldatascience.shinyapps.io/playmeans/). Prior to joining Babson College, Davit was a Senior Associate at the National Economics and Statistics practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers. In the latter role he consulted in the area of predictive modeling and advanced data analytics, helping clients from financial, healthcare, and government sectors with building automatic predictive models and enhancing business intelligence solutions. At Babson College, Davit has been teaching a wide spectrum of courses ranging from machine learning and predictive analytics to introductory statistics.

Vivian Leung
- Assistant Teaching Professor
Dr. Vivian Leung is a geologist whose research focuses on the intersection of channel dynamics, river restoration, and ecology. She examines the effects of dam removals and land-use on channel behavior and aquatic habitat using physical experiments and fieldwork. Prior to joining Babson, Dr. Leung worked for the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe on the interactions between the Elwha River dam removals, wood debris, and salmon habitat. She has taught classes on Natural Hazards, Water, Geology, and Physical Geography at Davidson College, the University of Richmond, and Mount Holyoke College. Her pedagogical research investigates the effects of near-peer mentoring on Hispanic and low-income student's interest in geoscience majors and careers. Dr. Leung received her Ph.D. in Earth and Space Sciences from the University of Washington and her B.S. in Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences from MIT.

Benjamin Levy

Ben Levy is an applied mathematician with a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. During his doctoral studies, he was a graduate assistant at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) and collaborated with the National Park Service on his dissertation project. Before joining Babson College, Ben was an Associate Professor at Fitchburg State University and held a visiting position at Bowdoin College.
As an educator, Ben aims to demonstrate how mathematics and statistics are crucial for understanding data, making predictions, and informing decisions. Michelle Li

Michelle Li's research and teaching interests lie in the domains of operations research, game theory, business analytics, supply chain network management, humanitarian logistics, and sustainable systems. She studies the economics, equilibrium, and dynamics of game theoretic supply chain networks, with applications to sustainability, corporate social responsibility, outsourcing, information asymmetry, and humanitarian blood banking. Her publication outlets include the European Journal of Operational Research, Omega, Annals of Operations Research, International Journal of Production Economics, etc., and has co-authored a book titled "Competing on Supply Chain Quality A Network Economics Perspective".

Dennis Mathaisel is Professor of Management Science at Babson College. He was a Research Scientist at MIT; founder and President of a computer software firm that developed systems for airline scheduling and resource allocation; and he was a Branch Manager for Operations Research at the McDonnell Douglas Corporation.

Elizabeth Milano

Dr. Bryson is a marine biologist and ecologist whose research centers on coastal and nearshore habitats in the Gulf of Maine. Dr. Bryson has taught at Babson in several capacities: as a laboratory instructor, an Adjunct Professor and as a Visiting Assistant Professor. Prior to her arrival at Babson, Dr. Bryson taught laboratory classes at Northeastern University. Dr. Bryson is interested teaching about both the opportunities and the challenges that occur at the intersection of human society and the natural environment. Dr. Bryson teaches introductory and advanced topics courses focused on environmental, ocean and climate sciences. Dr. Bryson's research is highly field based and is driven by questions pertaining to environmental context: how do oceanographic currents and temperature changes impact biological interactions and community structure, what is the appropriate geographic scale for ecological management strategies, how will temporal changes in climate conditions impact ecological communities, etc. Dr. Bryson's work on rocky shores has identified three distinct biogeographic provinces within Gulf of Maine nearshore environments, each governed by a different set of ecological ‘rules.' These findings provide a foundation for more regionally appropriate conservation and fisheries management decisions and policies. Dr. Bryson has experience working in a variety of marine habitats, including rocky shores, salt marshes, mudflats and coral reefs.

Dahri Myers

Dahri Myers is returning to Babson College after working and living in San Francisco for the past several years. She is the CEO and founder of DAHRI LLC, a fitness training corporation and a Consultant for Ivy Advisors, an MBA admissions firm.
Her other passions include international development and STEM education. Dahri taught mathematics for the SEO (Seizing Every Opportunity) Scholars' program and quantitative GMAT/GRE topics for to students in the Ivy Fellows diversity program. She is a Habitat for Humanity Global Village Team Leader and has led teams in Guatemala and Argentina. Her philanthropy includes volunteering with the surgical mission, Children's HeartLink, in Kenya and China as well as teaching mathematics to students in Zambia and Tanzania. Dahri also sits on the Tulane University Center for Public Service Advisory Council and has established the Myers' STEM Education Fund.
Dahri is a Mechanical Engineering graduate of the University of Oklahoma and earned her MBA with a Finance Major from The University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business.

Dr. Pachamanova is Professor and Zwerling Family Endowed Term Chair at Babson College and Research Affiliate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her research and consulting span multiple fields, including robust optimization, risk management, simulation, predictive analytics and machine learning, text analytics, and operations. She has authored and coauthored dozens of articles in operations research, finance, accounting, engineering, marketing and management journals, including in top academic and practitioner outlets such as Management Science, Operations Research, Production and Operations Management, Journal of Portfolio Management, Mathematical Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Marketing Management, and Technological Forecasting and Social Change. Dr. Pachamanova has also published numerous book chapters, as well as three books in computational finance and risk management: Robust Portfolio Optimization and Management (2007), Simulation and Optimization in Finance: Modeling with MATLAB, @RISK, or VBA (2010), and Portfolio Construction and Analytics (2016), all part of The Frank J. Fabozzi Series in Finance, J. Wiley & Sons.
Dr. Pachamanova teaches courses in analytics and computational finance in the undergraduate and the MBA programs, and cares deeply about creating a valuable learning experience for students. She co-designed Babson's undergraduate and MBA business analytics concentration curricula, co-chaired the design task force for a Masters program in Business Analytics, and co-developed the Business Analytics and Machine Learning MBA concentration. She has also served as faculty director for two open enrollment business analytics programs at Babson Executive Education, Business Analytics for Managers (face-to-face format) and the Babson-Pearson Business Analytics for Managers in India program (online/blended format), and has designed numerous modules on business analytics for custom executive education programs. Her cases, pedagogical innovations and interdisciplinary curriculum development research have appeared in peer-reviewed educational journals such as INFORMS Transactions on Education, Journal of Accounting Education, IMA Educational Case Journal, and Journal of Information Systems Education, and have been recognized with Babson's Deans Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Graduate School and with Poets and Quants' Top 50 Undergraduate Professors award.
Dr. Pachamanova serves on the INFORMS Professional Development Committee, the INFORMS OR & Analytics Student Team Competition Committee, the INFORMS Pro Bono Analytics Committee, and is Area Editor (Cases) for INFORMS Transactions on Education. She holds an A.B. from Princeton University and a Ph.D. from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Pachamanova teaches courses in analytics and computational finance in the undergraduate and the MBA programs, and cares deeply about creating a valuable learning experience for students. She has also served as faculty director for two open enrollment business analytics programs at Babson Executive Education, Business Analytics for Managers (face-to-face format) and the Babson-Pearson Business Analytics for Managers in India program (online/blended format), and has designed numerous modules on business analytics for custom executive education programs. Her cases, pedagogical innovations and interdisciplinary curriculum development research have appeared in peer-reviewed educational journals such as INFORMS Transactions on Education, Journal of Accounting Education, IMA Educational Case Journal, and Journal of Information Systems Education, and have been recognized with Babson's Deans Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Graduate School and with Poets and Quants' Top 50 Undergraduate Professors award.
Dr. Pachamanova serves on the INFORMS Professional Development Committee, the INFORMS OR & Analytics Student Team Competition Committee, the INFORMS Pro Bono Analytics Committee, and is Area Editor (Cases) for INFORMS Transactions on Education. She holds an A.B. from Princeton University and a Ph.D. from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mr. Recck has taught at Babson College since 1984. Prior to that, Mr. Recck worked his way toward his undergraduate and MBA degrees from Babson while working in Babson's Computer Center. After receiving his MBA from Babson in 1984, Mr. Recck was promoted to Director of Academic Computer Services and began his teaching career shortly thereafter. Mr. Recck founded Total Information, Inc., an consulting firm in 1991 that continues to this day providing a variety of clients a host of information services. Mr. Recck became the Director of the Math Resource Center at Babson in 2005 and is also an Associate Profess of Teaching in the Math, Analytics, Science, & Technology division. Mr. Recck has taught a variety of Business Analytics courses at all levels. He recently finish serving a two-year term as the Chair of the Business Analytics / Statistics Education special interest group for the American Statistical Association. Mr. Recck has also published in the areas of teaching business analytics and using analytics in sports. With nearly 30,000 registrations, Mr. Recck's Business Analytics Fundamentals on the edX open course platform was the most successful offering from Babson to date.

Terence Reilly

Since coming to Babson, Dr. Reilly has focused much of his attention on how best to educate his students. He has spearheaded curriculum changes in the graduate and undergraduate management science classes. He has been awarded a grant to implement cooperative learning in the classroom and was an invited speaker at the Teaching of Management Science Conference, University of Indiana, 2000. Dr. Reilly has also developed a distance learning course in decision analysis with the Babson/Intel MBA program.
Dr. Reilly's research interests include decision analysis, sensitivity analysis, copulas (multivariate distributions), and applied statistics. Other areas of expertise are in decision and risk analysis and simulations models. He has been published in Management Science, Decision Sciences, Structural Equation Modeling, and Sociological Methods and Research. He is also co-author with Bob Clemen of Making Hard Decisions with DecisionTools.

Vikki L. Rodgers

Dr. Rodgers is a professor of ecology who joined Babson College in September 2007 and currently serves as Science Director. She currently teaches ecology-based courses in: Socio-Ecological Urban Systems, Biomimicry, and Economic Botany. She received her B.S. in Biology at the University of New Hampshire and her Ph.D. in Forest Ecology and Biogeochemistry at Boston University. She regularly presents her ecology research at national conferences and her work is published in peer-reviewed scientific journals such as: BioScience, Journal of Ecology, Biogeochemistry, and Oecologia. She has received the Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence, the Faculty Scholarship Award, the Changemaker Award for positive social change on campus, and was named one of Poets and Quants Most Outstanding B-School Professors under 40 in the World.

As a field ecologist she is interested in all aspects of global environmental change, but primarily focuses on the plant and soil effects of climate change and the spread of invasive species. Leeann Simons

Ms. Simons has taught at The Pennsylvania State University, Middlesex Community College and Northeastern University. She also worked as a clinical nutritionist for Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates. She is involved in a collaborative effort with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Stop and Shop Supermarkets in an effort to provide on site health education. Areas of expertise include diabetes, weight control, and women's health.

Howard Troughton

Professor Troughton has taken a round-about way to teaching. After completing the required coursework for a Ph.D. in Mathematics, he decided to pursue a career that would use his skills as a birdwatcher. He completed a Master's degree in Environmental Science and his dissertation was studying wildlife control on airport property. After a few years as a wildlife ecologist, he began teaching mathematics courses where he met his wonderful wife, Polina. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Boston from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and have lived in the Boston area since. Professor Troughton has a wide range of interests and pursuits. He spends most summers in Calgary conducting wildlife surveys as part of the environmental assessment process for oil & gas projects. He is an avid history buff, collects coins & stamps and runs. He competes in agility with his dog, Cinders, and is training for his first marathon in 2013. Since 2002, he and his wife have visited all 50 states, 9 Canadian Provinces and the Yukon Territory.

Alexandra Vivelo

Sasha Vivelo received their PhD in biology from Boston University in 2021. Because fungi cycle up to three times more carbon than humans do annually, fungal ecology is a crucial piece of the global climate puzzle. However, we currently have limited understanding of what drives fungal activity. Sasha's research aims to link fungal decomposers' biology to their evolutionary history so we can better understand what drives fungal community assembly during fungal decomposer succession. Sasha is also a novelist and short story author whose fiction speculates on humanity's future in a changing climate.

Charles Winrich
- Associate Teaching Professor
Dr. Winrich teaches introductory, intermediate, and advanced science courses at the undergraduate level, focusing primarily on the application of physical principles to understanding technology and environmental hazards. He has taught at Iowa State University and Union College, where he also managed the observatory. He managed the planetarium at the Schenectady Museum, where he developed new content for the public and school programs. He has also been active in science teacher development programs, and informal science education. Dr. Winrich's research interests revolve around the use of the history and philosophy of science as a tool for understanding science. He has co-authored papers for the Journal of College Science Teaching, and the Conference Proceedings of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching in 2011, 2010, 2008, 2011, and 2013.

Hongsheng Wu

Dr. Hongsheng Wu received his M.S. in Math and Computer Science from Ohio University in 2001, his M.A. in Biostatistics from Boston University in 2005, and his Ph.D. in Biostatistics from Boston University in 2009.
Prior to joining Babson College, Dr. Wu taught at Wentworth Institute of Technology teaching computer science and data analytics in the School of Computing and Data Science.
Dr. Wu's research interests include clinical trials, health economics, genetics, and business analytics. He has been the lead statistician for large-scale multicenter trials such as a recently completed trial comparing two effective therapies to lower serum uric acid and therefore prevent further gout attacks. His research has been accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals such as: New England Journal of Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine Evidence, JAMA Psychiatry, and Nature Communications.

Vicky R Zhu

Dr. Vicky Zhu earned her Ph.D. (2023) and M.S. (2020) in Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Notre Dame, and her B.A. (2018) in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley. She is an enthusiastic educator, an avid researcher, and an innovative entrepreneur. Before joining Babson, she taught classes on statistics for business, finite mathematics, probability, and statistical inference at Mendoza College of Business in Notre Dame for three years. Having been nominated for the Midwestern Excellent in Teaching awards in 2021, she continued to practice her teaching philosophy that prepares students with confidence, critical thinking, and collaboration skills.
As an applied mathematician and data scientist, Dr. Zhu is interested in developing mathematical and computational methods to study neural dynamics and learning in the brain. Her current research focuses on connecting neuroscience and machine learning through models of recurrent neuronal networks. Specifically, she is working on establishing direct, one-to-one analogs between artificial and biological neural networks. She is going to expand her machine learning research into reinforcement learning, natural language modeling, and causal inference frameworks. Dr. Zhu is devoted to sharing her love for these subjects and their practical applications to diverse groups of people through classroom teaching, interdisciplinary research, and mentorship programs. In addition, she is passionate about discovering cutting-edge methods through technology to create business values. She is constantly seeking new ideas and tools from other resources and bringing them to her classroom and research. Dr. Zhu is excited to join the Babson community and contribute to Babson's superior education and innovative research.
