FME Venture Project Audit

The purpose of this audit tool is to help your team think systematically about Integrated Sustainability and how to embed Integrated Sustainability into your venture.

We ask you to consider these questions carefully. As you consider your answers to these questions, they may provide you with insight into how to change the structure of your venture so that Integrated Sustainability is more fully embedded. All of these questions will not apply to every venture. Work with those questions you think are most relevant to your team.

Stakeholders

  • Who are the key stakeholders for your venture?
  • How will they likely be impacted by your venture

Embedding Integrated Sustainability in the value chain

  • How did you structure the opportunity such that you created social or environmental value? For whom?
  • What is the social impact of the various aspects of your value chain?
  • What is the environmental impact of the various aspects of your value chain?
  • What are the risks with your venture:
    • What are the social and environmental risks associated with your proposed venture?
    • What are the potential social and environmental risks for the team members?
    • What are the potential social and environmental risks for your customers?
    • What, if any, reputational risks will be created by your proposed venture?
  • Thinking about these risks, what are ways you could restructure your project to embed Integrated Sustainability and create more social and economic value?

Cradle-to-Grave Lifecycle Review

  • What are the ingredients, chemicals or components in the product?
  • What are the energy and raw materials needed to create this product?
  • What about the materials to create packaging?
  • What can be recycled?
  • Does the plant/company itself create any environmental hazard? If so, describe.
  • Does the sale or manufacture of the product create any environmental hazard?
  • What are the social and environmental risks associated with the use of this product or raw material for your customers, employees or other stakeholders?
  • In what ways does the wholesaler/manufacturer of the product contribute to improving the working conditions, community or environmental context in which it operates?
    • If you have no information about the environmental impact of the wholesaler/supplier, how will your team manage the risks associated with not knowing?
    • What are the working conditions at the supplier/wholesaler?
  • Are there any psychological or physical safety hazards associated with work at the supplier?
  • Are there any known employee relations concerns at the workplace of the supplier?
  • Does the supplier make use of child labor?
  • Describe the overall approach to compensation (pay) for workers at the supplier?
  • Does the plant have a positive social impact?
    • If you have no information about the working conditions at the supplier/wholesaler, how will your team manage the risks associated with not knowing?

Community Service Partner

  • Who is your community service partners and how did you align with your venture project?
  • How are you dividing profits among community service partners?
  • How are you leveraging your community partnership relationship to increase the success of your project?

Structural Questions

  • How are you ensuring the various departments in the venture project are following responsible leadership so that they are focused on Integrated Sustainability in the actions of their department?
  • How will you manage your community service partnership?
  • How will you make sure your organization is run in a way in which people are treated fairly and are given opportunities to learn and grow in a safe environment?
