Overcoming barriers and constraints in creating breakthrough change is largely uncharted territory. And the notion of creating economic and social value simultaneously is under-explored. There are signs, however, that some leading businesses are reaching out beyond their fence lines, supply chains, and traditional distribution systems into the very fabric of society. Current conditions raise multiple and interlocking challenges for businesses, government, and civil society organizations. With the decreasing power of the state to address these matters, and the inability of civil society to do so on its own, business is beginning to engage difficult social and environmental issues not out of any sense of noblesse oblige, or even duty, but because it is expected to do so by its stakeholders and especially because such actions are required for its own sustainability and relevance.

Cheryl Yaffe Kiser is Executive Director of The Lewis Institute and The Babson Social Innovation Lab at Babson College. Before coming to Babson, Cheryl was the Managing Director of the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship. Most of her career she has been a voice on the role of business in society. For more than 12 years she played a central role in creating the largest research center of its kind in the U.S. and spearheaded a national initiative to engage leading businesses to take a collaborative approach to working on education issues called The UnCommon Table. For over a decade she managed the content and delivery of the largest annual conference in corporate citizenship, the International Corporate Citizenship Conference which drew representatives from over one third of the Fortune 500 every year and from 24 countries around the globe. ​​
