Steven Maler, Director

Steven Maler is Founding Artistic Director of Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) and Director of the Sorenson Center for the Arts at Babson College. At CSC he has been producing Free Shakespeare on the Boston Common productions since 1996, including Love's Labour's Lost, King Lear, Twelfth Night, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Coriolanus, All's Well That Ends Well, Othello, The Comedy of Errors, As You Like It, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, Henry V, The Tempest, Julius Caesar, and Romeo & Juliet; and A Midsummer Night's Dream in collaboration with Boston Landmarks Orchestra, featuring the Overture and Incidental Music of Felix Mendelssohn; as well as concert stagings of The Boys from Syracuse and Kiss Me, Kate at the Hatch Shell.

In collaboration with Google, he recently adapted and directed a first of its kind sixty minute virtual reality film of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, entitled Hamlet 360: Thy Father’s Spirit, starring Jack Cutmore-Scott, Jay O. Sanders, Brooke Adams, and Faran Tahir.  It is currently available for viewing on Boston public media producer WGBH’s YouTube channel; for more information, visit www.wgbh.org/hamlet360.

Other works include the world premiere of Our American Hamlet at the Sorenson Center; the world premiere of Robert Brustein's The Last Will; Peter Eötvös's operatic treatment of Tony Kushner's Angels in America (U.S. Premiere); The Turn of the Screw at New Repertory Theatre; Santaland Diaries and Porcelain at SpeakEasy Stage Company; Top Girls and Weldon Rising at Coyote Theatre; and The L.A. Plays by Han Ong at A.R. T. His New York City credits include the New York Musical Theatre Festival production of Without You, written by and starring Anthony Rapp for which he was recognized with an Honorable Mention for Excellence in Directing by The NYMF 2010 Awards for Excellence. The production recently concluded a successful run in Seoul, South Korea.

He has received the Elliot Norton Award for Sustained Excellence as well as for Best Production, Twelfth Night (CSC); Outstanding Director, A Midsummer Night's Dream (CSC); Best Production, Suburbia (SpeakEasy); Best Solo Performance, John Kuntz's Starf***ers, (also winning "Best Solo Performance Award" at New York International Fringe Festival).

His feature film The Autumn Heart, starring Tyne Daly, was in the Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival.

Steve is a graduate of the A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard University where he directed Woyzeck, Pericles, The Duchess of Malfi, and Ghosts. He was the associate director of Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2 and Henry V at the A.R.T., and Titus Andronicus and Hamlet in Tokyo. 

He grew up in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on the John Motley Morehead scholarship. He has lived in the Boston area for over twenty years.

Adam Sanders, Associate Director

Adam supports the artistic development of Babson’s undergraduate students, working with student groups to advance their artistic missions on campus. He also oversees the Sorenson Scholars, a small cohort of undergraduates that presents new artistic projects to the community yearly and grows through peer feedback. He also curates workshops in movement, voice and improvisation meant to complement Babson’s entrepreneurship curriculum.

Adam serves as the Associate Artistic Director of Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, where he oversees educational and community engagement efforts. He serves as director for the Apprentice Program, an intensive classical actor training program, and is the director and originator of CSC2, a cohort of early-career actors. Directing credits for CSC include: Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (CSC2 Company), Symphonic Shakespeare, (in collaboration with Boston Landmarks Orchestra at the Boston Hatch Shell on the Esplanade); co-director of Kiss Me Kate, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and The Boys From Syracuse (also BLO/Hatch Shell collaborations); and co-director and dramaturg for Shakespeare and Leadership; and Shakespeare at Fenway.

Adam holds a BA in English from UMass, Amherst, and an MA in Theatre and Community from Emerson College. He currently serves on the Board of StageSource, the professional association for the Boston-area theater community.

Danielle Krcmar, Associate Director, Visual Arts

Danielle Krcmar is the Associate Director for Visual Arts of the Sorenson Center, as well as the sculpture and mixed media instructor. She received the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant in 1993, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant and the Blanche Colman Foundation Grant in 2001. Her work has been shown in the Fuller Art Museum, The Art Complex Museum, The Gallery at Green Street, and other galleries in New England and New York. Her work has been covered in The New York Times, Sculpture Magazine, The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, and Arts Media. In addition to Babson, she has taught at Brandeis University, Clark University, and The Museum School in Boston.

Danielle received her MFA from UMass Amherst in 1996 and her BFA in Sculpture in 1992 from SUNY Binghamton, where she received the SUNY Binghamton Foundation Award.

Sorenson Center Staff

Leslie Chiu, General Manager

Leslie Chiu has been working as a stage manager and production manager for over twenty years, and most recently served as the Director of Production for the Department of Theater Arts at Brandeis University. Previous resident positions include Production Stage Manager for the long-running hit Off-Broadway show Blue Man Group in Boston and Production Stage Manager for the Virginia Opera. She served as Production Manager for several of CSC’s productions on Boston Common. Leslie received her MFA in Stage Management from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music and her BFA in Theatrical Design and Technology from Florida State University.

Heather Darrow, Director of Marketing

Heather is the Director of Marketing for BabsonARTS and theater-in-residence, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company.  Previously she was Development Director at New Repertory Theater which included overseeing the 30th Anniversary Campaign.  Before that, she was with Broadway Across America-Boston (now Broadway in Boston) as Associate Marketing Manager before assuming the role of Marketing Director, supporting the marketing efforts of touring Broadway productions.  Her career began at New York City Opera where she spent five years in the Marketing Department. 

Mark Lorenzo, Technical Director

Mark has an extensive background in the performing arts industry: two stints managing the Venue Communications Centers for the Salt Lake City and Vancouver, Winter Olympic Games; seven years with High Output Inc., a provider of theater and film production equipment as well as systems design and installation, theatrical production, and special events; and 10 years with the Boston Ballet Company in the production department. He attended both Boston University and Emerson College, where he assisted with the opening of the Emerson (now Cutler) Majestic Theater.

Maggie McCauley, Administrative Coordinator

Maggie grew up outside Boston and attended Boston University where she received a BA in Sociology. She has worked for a number of area startup companies; however, her passion is black and white photography. She currently resides in Uxbridge, MA, with her husband John (who is a demolition expert) and is a member of the Galatea Fine Arts Gallery, located in the SOWA area of Boston. Maggie is currently working on a show that will feature her personal ph​otography work.

Sorenson Center Associates

Clayton DeWalt, Band Director

Trombonist Clayton DeWalt directs the Babson Music Collective student music ensemble. He began touring and recording professionally at age 15. He has made a career of a wide range of musical styles including South African pop, blues, R&B, classical chamber music, salsa, Balkan brass, jazz, reggae and folk. Performing in venues ranging from Lincoln Center to the Monaco Opera House, he has worked with a variety of talented artists, such as Toshiko Akiyoshi, Nancy Wilson, John Brown’s Body, Robin McKelle, The New York Voices, the Gene Krupa Orchestra, The Temptations, and Regis Philbin. As an educator, Clayton teaches music in the Lincoln, Wayland and Canton public schools and maintains a private studio. Clayton holds a BS in Music Education from Slippery Rock University, a MM in Jazz Studies from the New England Conservatory of Music, and is currently pursuing his DMA in Jazz Studies at the New England Conservatory.

Katalin Mitchell, Press and Media Relations Representative

Katalin (Kati) Mitchell served as the Director of Press and Public Relations of the American Repertory Theater from 1989 to 2017. At ART she managed national and international press relations, publications and promotions and collaborated with New York producers and publicists on the transfer of several ART productions to Broadway. Previously Kati served for seven years as the Executive Director of the early music ensemble The Boston Camerata. Kati also helped launch the early seasons of CSC’s Shakespeare on the Common and now handles Press and Media Relations for CSC as well as BabsonARTS. She was born in Hungary and raised in Brazil, and has made Boston her home for over 40 years.

Janet Bailey, Marketing and Strategic Consultant

Janet is an independent consultant who provides marketing, strategic, development, organizational, and communications consulting services to arts and cultural organizations and other nonprofits. Prior to starting her own practice in 1997, Janet served for five years as General Manager and Director of Marketing for the Handel & Haydn Society and, before that, as a consultant with McKinsey & Company. Janet has been deeply involved in the leadership of professional associations throughout her career; she is a past President of the Boston Arts Marketing Alliance and currently serves as President of the Board of Directors of StageSource, the alliance of New England theater professionals, and as a member of the Corporation of the Community Music Center of Boston. She holds BA and MBA degrees from Boston University and serves on the faculty of BU’s graduate program in Arts Administration.
