Music

Whether modern, ethnic, classical, or a fusion of all three, music at Babson takes a variety of forms, all of which can serve as powerful conduits for entrepreneurial thinking. Regardless of the setting, music performances through BabsonARTS are engaging and innovative displays of talent and creative vision.

Coeck

Cocek! Brass Band Concert
Tuesday, March 1, 7:00 P.M.
Carling-Sorenson Theater
FREE. Reservations required HERE

“Half serious as a heart attack and half hilarious with enough singular cleverness to provoke a college course in the study of them” – Mark Tucker, FAME

The music of Cocek! Brass Band is influenced by Eastern-European and New Orleans dance songs, Afrobeat, Klezmer, and elements of reggae and Western classical pieces. Bandleader Sam Dechenne started the ensemble in the winter of 2014 and composes all the music for the band. Cocek! has performed in spaces ranging from hollowed out warehouses in Boston to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., WorldFest in Louisville, KY, and the NY Gypsy Music Festival. Join us for a Mardi Gras themed post-show celebration that you won’t want to miss!

As part of this residency Cocek! Brass Band will be holding a music clinic open to Babson, Olin, and Wellesley students, staff, and faculty the night before the concert. Musicians interested in performing at the concert with Cocek! Brass Band will have the opportunity to attend the open rehearsal after the clinic and join a couple of numbers at the concert. Details will be available at the beginning of the spring semester. For more information email babsonarts@babson.edu.

Sorenson Black Box

The Babson Music Collective is rooted in the jazz traditions of improvisation and creative expression. The group finds inspiration in a range of musical styles, from pop and afro-beat, to classic jazz standards. Drawing on each member’s personal playing style and experiences, the Collective creates unique arrangements for all of the music it plays. The Babson Music Collective performs at a number of concerts and events throughout the year, with the goal of fostering a community of Babson’s many student musicians and listeners.

Performance Venues and Piano Practice Rooms

Although the Band Room and Practice Rooms managed by BabsonARTS are closed this fall to open access, we are pleased to share that we have come up with a way to allow students to reserve spaces in a limited capacity with supervision for solo practice time and still be able to adhere to health, safety, and college protocols currently in place.

Note that the Piano Practice Room Agreement must be signed at the Sorenson Offices before access is granted.

The rooms that may be available on any given day include:
Practice Room 2 in the Sorenson Center
Studio 217
Rehearsal Studio
2D/3D Studio in the Sorenson Visual Arts Center/Trim

Several spaces will be available for individual bookings through reservation requests sent directly to Leslie Chiu at lchiu@babson.edu.
