Learning and Mobility Access to Education Abroad

The Glavin Office of International Education is committed to providing transformative and equitable education abroad opportunities for all students.

Your travel and education abroad experience is as unique as you are! The key to a successful experience is advanced planning and communication with our teams. It is important to note that attitudes toward disability and interpretation of accessibility varies from country to country. With advanced planning, the Glavin Office of International Education can work with you to identify the program or course that fits your aspirations and criteria for a successful experience abroad.

Your Application to Study Abroad

Your application to study abroad for a semester, year, or through a short-term program is evaluated, and accepted, based on:

  • Your interest
  • Academic qualifications (i.e. meeting program prerequisites)
  • Space availability

Be sure to review application materials and requirements thoroughly. Pay attention to application deadlines. A late application, for example, will impact whether you will be considered for a program. Before you submit your application, be sure that it addresses these key points:

  1. Have you incorporated an understanding of the program learning objectives in your responses?
  2. Have you articulated your interests and goals for your education abroad experience?
  3. Have you completed and submitted all application requirements?

Reach out to an Education Abroad Advisor or Short-Term Program Manager with your questions or concerns.

Academic, Mobility, and Housing Accommodations Abroad

Once accepted into a program, the Glavin Office will request information from all participants for the purpose of supporting individual safety and wellbeing while abroad. It is expected that you will be proactive and engage your healthcare provider and/or academic support at the time of your acceptance to develop a plan, based on your individual health and learning needs. The Glavin Office teams can advise you about engaging these resources as needed.

Before selecting an education abroad program students should meet with an Education Abroad Advisor in the Glavin Office of International Education to determine the program of best fit for their individual needs. In addition to assisting with program selection, the advisor can also speak with the program provider or overseas institution directly to help arrange for certain accommodations, and can help ensure that students will have access to resources that will make their Education Abroad experience a successful one.

It is very important that accommodations are arranged before you matriculate. Prior approval may be necessary at some institutions, and it may not be possible to arrange accommodations upon arrival in the selected country.

The Department of Accessibility Services will send a letter to the Education Abroad program or exchange partner verifying approved accommodations at Babson College. Please note that not all accommodations existing at Babson College may be available at Education Abroad programs or institutions.

To request accommodations abroad, students complete and submit the Education Abroad Accommodation Application located on the Accessibility Services Hub site. Be sure to include the following information:

  • Name of Education Abroad Institution
  • First and Last Name of Program Contact
  • Email of Program Contact

Please contact Accessibility Services with any questions.

Short-Term Programs are Babson sponsored courses led by Babson faculty. Prior to selecting a Short-Term Program, students should meet with a Short-Term Program Manager in the Glavin Office of International Education to determine which program is the best fit for their individual needs. In addition to assisting with program selection, the program manager can speak directly with the course's faculty, course administrator, third-party provider, and/or in-country partners to help arrange for certain accommodations, and can help ensure that students will have access to resources that will make their Short-Term Program experience a successful one.

To request Short-Term Program accommodations students complete and submit the Application Form located on the Accessibility Services Hub site. Be sure to include the following information in your application:

  • Name and dates of Short-Term Program
  • First and Last Name of Program Manager
  • Email of Program Manager

Mobility, Mental Health, and Wellness

Travel logistics and the transition-rich nature of short-term programs require your special attention to how the course itinerary may affect your daily routine. Your Program Manager can work with you to review the daily pace, terrain, and expectations for engagement. The course faculty is also available to navigate assignments and requirements to complete the course.

When you commit to a course, it is with the understanding that you have considered these aspects of the course and developed a plan for success, including conversations with your healthcare provider and academic support.
